We only have one plate on our Malibu, 4,400 but our registration document says 4,250 which would be used if we were weighed
Why the discrepancy.??
Only guessing but would they not go by the weight on their computor held info... I.E. your DVLA reg document.
After all, how do they know your other plated weight has not been tampered with or fitted in error.???

I have never forgotten pulling up behind a small volvo at temporary traffic lights and noticing that they had a very softlooking offside rear tyre, being a good boy scout I ran up to say about it I said
" you've either got a soft tyre or a VERY fat passenger in the back! as i looked round at the back seat, she must have 25 stone if she was an ounce!!
I try to be more subtle these days!!

I know that, but was asking how VOSA apply the law if one is technically in breach of plated weight, but they as a knowledgeable organisation know that you vehicle is not dangerous.

Geoff
They know that the vehicle is not dangerous because the design weight is determined by the manufacturers and how could they take on the technical dept of Scania, Mercedes or Iveco or any other,it is the plated weight to adhere to.My own van is fiat ducato heavy chassis uprated to 38050 with 16 inch wheels, which is enough for me but could have plated it much higher.
In the past I have had lorry chassis shortend , axles added ,and uprated etc

My Mobilvetta A class has one plate - under the bonnet - 3500kg (Fiat base vehicle).
There is a converters plate inside the passenger door - completely blank. The van is on the Maxi heavy duty chassis and air.
When I bought it was rated at 3850kg. The previous owner didn't know and didn't have a C1 !
I down-plated it to 3500kg
Is the van any less safe if I go a bit over the 3500kg ?

You must have 2 plates the Fiat one and the Malibu one, I suspect the Malibu one states 4250kg.

Have not seen motorhomes being pulled for checks in UK ( I cant remember the last time I spotted an HGV one)
I have seen them in Germany pulling in motorhomes and caravans. I assume they were getting weighed. We were heading in the opposite direction.
As previously mentioned a full tank of fuel and water and a lot of folk will be over the 3500kg before you add in the toys like inflatable canoes, e-Bikes and all the other stuff we kart about.
Like a lot of things it's not treated as a big issue until some tragedy hits the media.
I've seen quite a few getting pulled just outside Brighton on the A23

Most if not all van are plated around 3850kg, as I am sure you are aware But because of our licensing laws the manufactures down plate them to 3500kg (my Movano DRW is plated at 3500kg but there is no difference between that and it 4500kg sister), that is why it is just a paper exercise to upgrade these vehicles back to the manufacturers GVW.
HOWEVER...In addition you state you have downplated your van back to 3500kg.
So it is no more unsafe, NO,
HOWEVER you now have a 3500kg van with the documents to go and support that fact and it is therefore now ILLEGAL to drive it even, as you say "a bit overweight".
As was commented earlier some poeple dont think rules/
laws apply to them.

I weighed the van empty - 3300kg so NOT illegal IF I don't exceed 3500kg
Already said that allowances are made for SLIGHTLY overweight.....

3300 kg empty... no not overweight... However only leaves 200kg.
Not being cheeky but do you have a co pilot, if so their weight has to come off your 200kg.
Not much left and have you ever weighd all the rest of the essentials you put in? and what exactly do you mean by "allowances have been made for overweight." Are you saying you are prepared to drive 5 /10%overweight.
Unladen weight of 3300kg is above the 3050KG unladen weight for speed limits so I hope as well as breaking the over weight laws you are not also breaking the UK speed limits as applied to an over 3050kg unladen weight vehicles.

Ex Caravan owner now a Motorhome owner since November 2020
In 2021 I took my Adria at 3500KG to a local weigh bridge, it was almost ready to go away, wife & myself in but no awning or water, no bikes only half tank of fuel, a few items of food no beers no dog, when total weight was done it only left 24kg spare, this was before I added a levelling system & semi air,

If I travel at 10% 'overweight' that would take me to the previous revenue weight of 3850kg and a possible fine of £100.
It is still exactly the same van! - apart from the V5
Now I can legally drive in 3.5t areas, tolls are cheaper, anyone with just a car licence can drive and it will be easier to sell.
I usually travel alone.
Previous owner took his wife, 3 kids, massive awning and all their gear to the South of France unaware of weight and no C1.....

No but they can move passengers about on an aeroplane. Read that somewhere.
There is discussion about weighing airline passengers ...

It’s something to do with balancing the plane for safety and fuel economy been going on for years.

just using another excuse . If four large one very large people were behind each other on one side at the back of the plane attendants would move passengers around.

I agree but in any case VOSA would be taking the one on the V5.

I still have the 'old' V5 with 3850kg on.

I know I should have destroyed it but what if I showed them both V5s ?

The new one shows the revenue weight (more tax) the old one its true capacity.

Just asking....
