In my experience traveling alone sucks, for me, a new town or a nice view is nothing if it's not shared. I'm tremendously lucky as I have a partner I can share tours and explore with, but I know many who do not.

With this in mind I'm working on new site. It will be a little like a dating site but with a difference, its aim will not be to find love, (but then who knows) but rather find someone who shares a love of travel. Whether that be travel in motorhomes, in the same motorhome or in convoy, travel on foot, in a boat, fly-drive adventures, or just holiday together etc.

It will hopefully facilitate meeting, chatting and getting to know potential travel buddies well, using private and public forums and chat-rooms and other social functions before arranging to meet and then make plans for travel.

If you might be interested in joining such a site, then please say so in the poll. Don't worry the poll is totally anonymous. :thumb: Thanks.

Please feel free to comment on my plans and as most know my skin is as thick as they come:Laughing:

Have done it once Jim, with Alan and Lynda laneside it went very well and i like to think are now very good friends.
Btw it is all their fault we now live in France!!!
Now the "but" We have met a few who ended up falling out. Wanted to go to different places, toll non toll, wanted to drive at different speeds or even go off on their own for a day.

So not for me sorry!

There should be a "no" in your poll.

Hi Ken, thanks for your input, the 'No's' will obviously outnumber those interested, So I'm not interested in those, just the number who might be:thumb:

If you google Travel Partner you get a good few sites to choose from Jim,so there is a good deal of competition out there.
I think with Motorhome Fun you've got the best of the few motorhome websites and if you can find something that makes it better than the competition or can add something that they haven't got, as you seem to have done here, you won't loose a lot by giving it a go!

Thanks...I'd like the scope of the travel to be broad, but to start with I can promote the motorhome travel aspect of the site quite effectively and hopefully this will jump start it. That said I imagine it being at least an 18 month project to see if it takes off, like you say, I've got to do a lot of work to overhaul quite a few competitors. It might work, we'll see. :thumb:

As a single person (and being new to the scene), I like the idea of this Jim. I'll be following your developments with interest.

Good Luck with it mate! :thumb:

I am not sure it's a runner Jim or not a money making runner anyway.

I have been wrong before though:Doh::BigGrin:

I think its a great idea:Smile:

I'm a very busy professional and don't get a lot of time to socialise, lots of my friends are in the same boat. I'm married now, however, 5 years ago I would have loved a place to go to chat and meet with peeps who wanted to travel. Trawling through bars just wasn't my style and sometimes I just wanted some company to travel. Sounds like a fab idea Jim.:thumb:

I can see that actually:thumb:

I would think though that solo travellers are about 5% ? of travellers so I am not sure the numbers are there myself.

Trawling through bars is more my style, but without any catches:Sad:

Think its a great idea for solo travellers
I'm lucky that Jan shares my love of travelling and we get on well.
But I also do solo long distance motorcycle trips as you know and as much as I enjoy these it's not the same as sharing it with someone.

As I posted on CapnPugwash thread, I should be really interested in travelling next winter with like-minded souls to the south of Spain, Portugal or even Morocco. Last year I joined The New Companions, but they don't seem to travel or camp much in the winter, so rather disappointing. I have a partner who is not yet retired, (and probably never will be!), so I would like to find agreeable company for adventures!

Sounds good to me as well Jim,no it will not suit everyone, but it does tick all the boxes that
Catherine (Viennese) has alluded to.
I too can travel anytime(now retired) but the rest of my Family still have commitments:cry:

Yes if I must travel by myself, I will but, its much nicer to have company:thumb:

I personally prefer to travel alone. No debates or arguments about times, places or routes etc. I prefer to do things spontaneously and decide in the moment. working to plans is not for me.

Good luck with it though.

I did travel alone for several years and was happy to do that. I built up a good friend base that everyone had a good idea of where everyone else was at certain times of the year. Although we seldom actually travelled together we did meet up on various beaches throughout the year. I think its a good idea as long as people treat it as a travel forum and not a dating/singles forum. There are enough of those out there as it is.

theres groups already out there that have been doing this for years such as the good companions. unless you can find a new usp then in my opinion its just another website trying to suck in punters

a great idea but without a unique angle, a waste of time and money. maybe put some effort into a travel partners area of this forum first to test the water

Although I am married and Jan and I love to travel, should I ever find myself alone, I would want a traveling companion. I don't think it would be the same on my own.
Great idea Jim.
As it doesn't really apply to be I haven't voted but would definitely vote yes if I found myself on my own.
Good luck:thumb:

Not sure on this one...

Only way to see if it would work, is by taking the bull by the horns so`s to speak...

And get a volunteer who has travelled on their own, and who will be, and put up a few suggestions for next Autumn/Winter..

Route... Times... approx. miles... places that individual is likely to go,,,, and duration of trip...

And see what response is forthcoming... :thumb:

hi jim, just joined this site, more or less for the reasons you are suggesting starting another site... ie I'm a single /solo traveller and would like company on trips and make new friends ... think everything is already in place on this site to do all that,.. like everyone seems really friendly/helpful, seem to be quite a few meets organised and you have a solo section on here. what more could I want or have I missed something..lol . just up to me to make the effort to attend some meets and who knows could be wintering in spain, Portugal, morocco next winter with some new friends....
just my thoughts regards andy

YES!

It's a big yes from me. A couple of examples.

I was at a party a few years ago and was talking to a lad there. We did not live anywhere near each other but we often text/SKYPE etc. This particular day, I said "I've just been made redundant, so I'm off travelling for three months". He asked is he could come. He did. We barely knew each other but lived together for three months, throughout Europe. We are firm friends now.

Another friend, this time a motorhomer, advertised on some American sites for a travelling companion. A lovely lady joined him for months as they travelled Europe together.

Definitely yes yes yes

I have quite generous annual leave allowance so my friend who comes with me has to fly home half way through. On my second five week trip later this year, I'm on my own, would love a van share.

A great idea, sort of a " Ive got 2 fold up chairs, looking for someone with a large motorhome to share holidays..."

:getmecoat:

twinned with "ditch the bitch .com"

mmmm:Eeek:

Fold-up chairs are always useful ............ if accompanied by an intelligent, countryside-loving, board game-playing, combined butler/RAC man.

I would be interested in convoy traveling to Europe, Eurodisney in particular. The kids would love to go and I have been considering it but not that confident about the ferry and driving on the right etc, would appreciate having someone to follow!:Laughing would be even better if there were other kids as company for mine.

I do not know if this a variation on your theme or something different altogether, as you move from area to area, taking Scotland as an example. Lots of folk have never been and are not sure where to go and what to see. So buddying up for a week or so with an ethnic telling everything he / she knows about the country, could be excellent, and as others travel around the country could be picked up by a local discovering, value for money things and visiting landmarks more quickly than the visitors guide books advise. This could then be extended to overseas travel as folk see fit or want to attempt.

This also gives you a chance to socialise as well of an evening and if single folk or couples hit it off as a group could organise future trips and travels as they see fit.

Whilst giving lone travellers company for a few days or week(s), whilst offering freedom to roam off if they wish.

Surely worth consideration if it makes folk feel more secure in their travels.

Well done Jim - looks like this idea could really fly. Interesting that the 'Solo campers' option on here never did really take off. I think there must be more solo travellers now than there were 2 years ago!

Catherine

I will be Sian's travel partner

We will "off into the sunset"

for "luxury and pampering"

SIAN ARE U UP FOR IT xxxxxx

as for travel partners, the mere thought of me going on my own to a spanish funster meet brought out the monster in Tony.

Having told him I was going providing I could get a cheap flight he didnt speak to me for 3 days.

I was the ogre from hell and couldnt do anything right hehehehe but then we've not been apart since we started dating when I was sixteen so perhaps I put the fear of god into him.

Who knows.

Come on Sian - a nice luxury break - just you and me what you think xxxxx as long as its in the uk tony wont mind

Might be of interest if there was a poll just to have a more accurate idea of lone travellers, Jim, someone, as I have no idea how to do it.
