Thor Industries to buy out Hymer

Hope Thor replace the battery hungry heating furnace for something more modern in the future.

After having had 10yrs with RV,s I still havent fully got them out of my system:LOL: We had 4 RV,s in that time and loved every one ,the space and the smooth power coupled with all the extras as standard were the thing for me.For me the build quality was ok especially in the Tiffin Allegro Bus we had ,but we are now on our 2nd N&B and the build quality is as good as it gets in a motorhome IMO.Would i go back to an RV? Well it has been discussed, watch this space i guess;)

Our friend has a 2012 Thor and whilst it was nice, I didn't intend to buy one when we decided that it was time to replace our Gulf Stream Sun Voyager. However, comparing a 2012 Windsport to a 2018 Windsport is like comparing chalk to cheese. I should have suspected that there was some European intent, as the woodwork is much more European in style, finish and colour and everything is a lot more subtle.

I think that Hymer will remain a reasonable quality manufacturer, but they will be able to incorporate things that being part of a much larger manufacturer allows fiscally.

So a good thing

This may be part of the US takeover rush while there is still a glut of money at very low interest rates for big corporations to borrow.

It now seems ironic that Hymer bought US manufacturer Roadtrek in 2016.

I personally think that it is all down to Brexit. With the UK leaving having had a democratic vote, taking our £13,700,000,000.00 with us the EU is likely to implode

The Yanks are moving in already picking up the bargains

After reading all the comments I'll just keep my Carthago crap. Best the crap you're used to repairing i suppose.

I would love another 'small' RV after owning several old and new variants, but it would have to have the Alde wet heating system combined with the rapid heat from a us furnace and a decent oven, ( we have changed the oven in our last us camper and in our present euro van ----- both were crap!!) We do miss the fridges of the RVs even though our present one is considered a big one by euro. standards!! We are still using the last US fridge we had in our 'cabin' it is on min setting and freezes better than our new one in the euro van, both dometic ---- I suspect the yanks specify better units than European van builders!!! Also AFAIK all us fridges are vented through the roof----- seems obvious to me for best airflow!!!
I have a feeling that Nishmann+bischoff had American influence when building their first vans hence some black tanks, fantastic fans and other better fittings, we even looked at an early one with the GMC V8 diesel engine and auto, so maybe nothing new with yank/ euro made vans!!
I still miss the power of our Cummins diesel engines considering that our 2.8 iveco gives the same mpg but the Cummins had SOO much more power!!!!!!!!

It would be excellent if the UK could have the option of the Ducato V6 with proper torque converter autobox that is made for the US market and rebadged as a Dodge.

You mean instead of the stupid sewing machine engine in our new van (n)

I think Thor needs a European product to keep their coffers up.
RV sales in uk and Europe have plummeted, with I think, only half a dozen imported into the UK last year.
They don't understand the euro market.
They think they know everything and the usa is the center of the world!!!
But we know better ;)

I think that the numbers in the States are daft, something like ten million households have an RV, the handful that are sold into Europe aren't probably even counted. 355,000 new RV's and travel trailers sold in the States last year alone.

Well they have been making RV's for a long long time! I knew about (and wanted) a Winnebago when my parents were driving me around in a Bedford Dormerbile

The Winnebago's had air conditioning (didn't know what that was) whilst my Dad lit the gas mantles at night lol

Its the same as Little Chef and Wimpy We didn't know better until Costa, Burger King, KFC and MacDonald arrived (Cue someone saying that they wouldn't be seen dead in a XZY) The point is that once they move in with an Anglicised version? Well Find me a Wimpy that is doing well?

Is Costa not a company of British origin?

One of them the guy is bitching because his CD player packed up out of Warranty. So as pertinent as slagging Hymer off if a Pioneer head unit packed up put of warranty!

Our new HYMER is a major disappointment to me and the worst van for minor faults we have had .
Ooo!

Last weekend we drove 140 miles to view a new Hymer, it was pretty much what we were looking for. Unfortunately we discovered rust water marks running down the walls under the bedroom windows, also the wall was bulging out beneath the offside bedroom window. On lifting the rubber seal the window frame was badly corroded with bits just falling off. Asked the salesman if he was aware of the problem and he said yes it was caused by condensation. He went on to say
the metal frame had not been made from the correct material and Hymer had authorised
them to rectify the fault. He was confident that once they had stripped and rebuilt it nobody would be any the wiser .
The level of corrosion and water damage was concerning on a brand new motorhome
so we said goodbye. Ray
Ooo!

I call ours the HYMER PIG
It’s better than some but basically thrown together with poor quality materials and appliances by unskilled monkeys .
My old joiner would cry if he saw the standard of workmanship.
Ooo!

Perhaps Thor have "rescued" them?

 :ROFLMAO:

Probably LOL

Googled it! Coca-Cola bought it. It was started in the UK by two Italians and they sold it to Whitbread, So your right. But the example remains a good one

New I should have said Starbucks(y)

Motorhoming in the us and in europe have different requirements.
US purchasers are much more demanding when spending their money.
We put up with a lot of cr@p that US buyers don't.

Oh dear have I bought the wrong van then ,mind you the garage leaks !!! Something I didn’t expect hopefully it will be fixed

Looks like you have an Exsis, probably not the garage leaking. If you overfill the water tank the inspection cap leaks and fills the centre tray in the garage.

Thanks for that Lenny I must admit I have overfilled it once but this has happened twice now and it’s usually after driving in very heavy rain , and how does the water get into the garage from the tank as I don’t think there is an overflow pipe like I had on my last van and when I’m filling up the gauge goes from 75% to 100 in seconds and yes it is an exsis

The centre tray in the garage runs right through to the tank. There is an overflow that exits under the van but it's the inspection cap that leaks unless it's very tight.

Our Exsis had same problem as long as inspection cover tight it was ok when filling you just need to stop when gauge changes to 100%.(y)

Okay I understand that there was some water in the centre tray but the garage floor was wet as well under the rubber mat near both doors and soaked a couple of cardboard boxes anyway it’s going back soon so perhaps they will tighten the doors or something we will see, thanks for your comments all
