We have a Cello tv ( not made specifically for motorhome) and an Oyster dish. We can get very few channels on the tv. We are thinking of buying a Freesat box or using one of our older Humax boxes. We would need it be 12v as we tend not to be on hook up can anyone advise if there is anything available that would do the job without using our Wi-Fi connection.

I used an old humax freesat box from home, I think they are all 12v and I just cut off the mains and used the 12v lead that came from the mains box. Had it running for years and was great as I could record another channel while watching and of course while I was away from the van… no problems from voltage fluctuations from hook-up and solar…

Thanks. The Humax box that I was going to use doesn't have a transformer...if that's the name...the mains cable goes straight from the box to the mains socket, so I suppose that won't work. I'm quite happy to buy a new set top box if it's possible to change it to 12volt.

It won't be the TV it can only receive what is coming from the sat.
Although the tuner in the Cello is a bit naff compared to an Icecrypt or Humax it will still pick up all the avaliable channels.

I would make sure your Oyster has the latest updates a lot of Oyster don't update automatically so if some channel frequencies have changed you will loose them.

A small inverter might be a cheaper option.

I use that box running straight from van 12volt supply, works very well.
I no understand. How? I'm very happy with mains Humax. How can it run from 12v?

The Humax HB1000s has a mains brick but the unit runs on 12volt, so I bought something like this ( not sure if this is the size)
and made a lead up with a cigarette plug on the end. ( I did it this way to keep the original 240 volt lead )

Aren't some people clever! Wish I was. I've just sold a Humax I had spare. Doh.

I had better check the Oyster before I spend more money. Is updating a thing that I can do, or does it need taking somewhere to have it done. I can blindly follow instructions but that doesn’t mean that I know what I am doing.

Wouldn’t worry to much the Boss explains why:

Fairly straight forward but as you are not using an Oyster receiver probably has to be done by USB.

Could you tell me what an Oyster receiver is please. We all need to learn something new every day.

How to I retune the satellite dish please

It sounds to me like the dish is pointing at Astra 1 and not Astra 2.
Astra 1 carries some English channels but I think the majority are German

No it’s definitely Astra 2

A Freesat box will probably get less channel than you should be getting.
There are over 200 free to air channels, and a Freesat box only gets about 150 of them, as not all free to air channels are on Freesat.
Assuming your system is working correctly, and your Chello TV has a decent tuner, then it should get all the free to air channels.
Going freesat will only benefit if your current system is SD only, if you want the 7 day programme guide, and automatic channel updates.

Hi all,

Thanks Speve for the tag. It's so handy that you and others do that. Things are a lot busier for me at work these days and I've got very little time to scan the forum so thank you.
Casper46 an Oyster receiver is a black or silver metal box on Oyster Digital variant systems. It not only locks the dish onto the satellite but it also has the ability to display the channels itself as well.
Firstly I just need to check how you operate the system. We have the Vision variant which is normally operated via a small 4 button control box and then we have the Digital variant which is operated via remote control. Once I have this information I can advise.

Manhatan box runs on 12v and are about £40 and are freesat like Humax but don't record.

Think I have 35 free view channels and guess what,,not a decent program on any other than last nights documentary on BBC 2 about Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood..Could not believe how shy Keith Richards is, unlike Ronnie.BUSBY.

Casper46 I still haven't heard back from you re my questions about your system.
Unfortunately I'm now off to Germany until Friday. I will still be able to access Motorhome fun but I will be restricted on how quickly I can reply so please bear with me if you reply during that time..

Wouldn't bother Anthony, another member who shouts for help then NEVER comes back to the thread to see advice or answer questions.
Made a further 8 posts since this and still not looked here for advice.
Makes my blood boil.

I am very sorry for the delay in replying I wasn't expecting anything from you and I missed your answers. I have just been down to the garage to check the control box. We have a silver box with 4 buttons.
As for Papajohns post, I try to thank everyone who replies to my posts, boiling blood is not good for your ticker. I know that I sometimes miss replies but then I also often walk into the next room and have no idea why, it's the result of old age catching up.

Casper46 So pleased to read that Satandpcguy Anthony OysterTech among others can help you. I don't know if its any use to you, depending on your advice but I have an icecrypt box I wont be using anymore. If it's any use to you and you can collect from Leeds you are welcome to it.
