The most surprising thing about driving them is how soft the ride is , they are quite American style floaty :)

The owner probably didn't have the budget available to buy the real top spec version. See below with full ballistic protection; mine defeating 'v-hull' and fully enclosed air system. You need this for any C&MC site IMO:D

One of those pulled in near me at a Loch up in the Highlands, went down to the lochside, made a bit of a mess, churned up the loch side down to about 18". But kept going and didn't get stuck.

I just thought.....why ????????

Why isn't it in the middle of the Gobi Desert or somewhere like that? :)
The Germans, Swiss, Dutch and Belgians seem to like them. Seen a fair few around, usually on campsites. :)
I'm not knocking them but not so many places left you can use them properly now. You could drive overland to India once through Afghanistan, but that's not so easy now.

great bit of kit, (for going to China) but like a fish out of water in the UK, pointless for European camping..

it's an expedition tool for someone with very deep pockets ..

it's like buying an expensive 4x4 for the school run.. it's all about style and being seen .. and nothing about practicality ..

My son having a go in one.. Morocco

Went in the late 70s on local transport before the start of all troubles in that lovely country Afghanistan and its people, would have been great in a MH!

We parked up next to it on The M11 services last week on the way back from Norfolk Show. It did look cool but a bit OTT for touring the UK, I think it was nearly new, cant remember the number plate, but think it may have been German. I couldn't help thinking also that for such a large chassis and wheel set up, the Box mounted on the top was relatively small, wonder what facilities are inside, what MPG?, is it really all about being showy? Maybe they intend to go to the Arctic Circle, or Africa or even the outback, if not then sure enough it is all about being showy.;)

Local off road driving center had one for transporting Suzuki Vitara jeeps on A frames from the yard to the forest base hut.......
5 at a time.
Quite impressive, a Unimog towing five jeeps nose to tail......up a 1 in 4 gradient.
It's primary role was recovering jeeps which had become bogged or rolled over. Go just about anywhere

Their main purpose is as expedition vehicles, don't need luxuries in a expedition vehicle just somewhere to sleep, cook and keep your food fresh.

They are a bit like a landrover diesel defender on steroids , and give a similar travel experience , not very fast and quite agricultural .
U5000 7.5 tonner does about 15mpg . Basic model about £80K new !

The rear boxes not cheap but quite well specced : http://www.blissmobil.com/en/products/11ft

Interesting link @tacr2man they seem to be more heavily specked inside than I guessed they would be, as @papajohn has indicated I thought they would indeed be very basic, but it seems thats not the case with those shown on the website link, infact they are very nicely finished inside, with all mod cons. Interesting, but not for us, would be over the top even at The Chester Rally, as the mud ruts were only 6-9 inches deep:DMight be a handy vehicle for the rally marshals though:D, are up for one @Carol ?:) you can tow us out anytime with one of those.

I would make HIM back up if I came head to head on The NC500, now that would be entertaining, but on second thoughts maybe the bugger would drive over the top of us! worse still it could be a SHE driving, then option one would be impossible :D:imoutahere:
