Received this morning from Iglhaut Allrad, German 4x4 specialists. Invoice to supply a spare wheel carrier for the rear door of my van.
The carrier is expensive however excellent quality and more importantly in stock and available for shipping.
But here's the kicker, check out the export costs!
Is this how life's going to be in future?
Government really needs to sort out these's problems if economic recovery is going to happen.

Are you really going to pay this? when all you need is a couple of bolts through the back door.

Or is it more like your supplier is taking the piss.

I ordered from a Dutch company a couple of weeks ago, note the delivery cost and no customs bull.

I believe it is a different process depending on the value of the goods £135 is the cut off I think. I am not defending the customs cost for the bike rack BTW.

That's right, over £135 there shouldn't be any customs charges or VAT from the supplier it down to you the importer to pay them.

Not sure on the procedure I'm just a customer that prior to leaving the EU things were very much simpler.
The reason I went for that particular bar is that it can handle the weight of large wheels and tyres and has specialist fixings.
Drilling 4 holes and sticking a plate on to a 80k vehicle is not advisable.

Cant understand ( notwithstanding your other posts critical of the government) how this is for the UK Govt to “sort out”

I assume you are not going to pay it, and when others dont , the market will sort it

Surely it would be cheaper to get one made in the UK...
Nail on the head
That’s what I meant about the market AND ironically for the OP who appears to be having a go at the Government, if making it here because its cheaper than importing one IS THE FASTEST WAY TO MAKE THIS COUNTRY MORE PROSPEROUS

Hi not sure what’s so special about this German company’s wheel carrier is , ive Just seen your van on YouTube ,a 2020 model and they all seem to use the rear door hinges to fit this carrier
Personally I would be looking at something like this on eBay 224346126409
and have it powder coated to the colour of choice
seems this German company dose not want your business and is pricing accordingly
or he’s taking the pi$$

If anyone can tell me of a UK supplier I would be grateful.
I did try one UK supplier who's bar didn't fit properly on the new Sprinter and another who doesn't return calls or emails.
The main U S supplier of this type of carrier, Owl vans is not exporting to UK, a French supplier N4 off road has a two month turn around (many order and shipping problems) and the German company has high import costs.
Most of the quality carriers cost around £1000, heavy duty to take oversized wheels with quality finishes and fixings.

How would the £1000 item from Germany be fixed then?
The spare on our van has done 20,000 miles and never moved an inch, 3 bolts through the door , probably cost a fiver all in including the bolts and electric for the drill.
Can't see how much the van cost makes a lot of difference.

I have a American vehicle and buy a lot from American dealers
just went on to their site and priced some brake pads ,the price they quote is in English pounds and includes all frieight charges and U.K. vat
so the price I see is the price I pay ,usually takes about a week and they don’t seem to have the hassle importing bits into the U.K. that your German company have
there are many many suppliers out there

Buy British - where possible - might be the Governments idea i.e. no rush to make paperwork/costs easier if the effect is to encourage folks to look closer to home. Why would they care about whether a German business loses out because UK consumers choose not to pay exorbitant delivery costs?

I emailed the American supplier Owl, last week and was told they weren't able to export to the UK, will try a couple of companies that stock their bars and report back.

Yes there are suppliers in the USA that also cannot be bothered to supply the the U.K. market , why should they they already have a vast market
but if you really want some thing from the states then speak to a uk American car spares importer , they may have it sent to their us contact to have it put in the next U.K. bound container

With respect, I don't understand your comment. How does it benefit the economy you sending money abroad to buy something? What does the Government need to "sort out?" to get an economic recovery

You could argue that it helps the economic recovery if people buy British to avoid being ripped off by German companies

I know nothing about rear door spare wheel carriers but UK companies offering such at circa £200 is money spent with a UK business https://www.wheeliams.co.uk/product...-rear-door-spare-wheel-carrier-4x4-expedition

Now that would help the economic recovery!

He doesn't want one of them but the OWL stainless steel powder coated , swing -away system that can also be modified for other uses.

As above .There was a thread a few weeks back with the complete "how it is made " link

or here;

The UK economy will benefit, my local tyre dealer will fit a new tyre, a used part breaker has already supplied a nearly new wheel, UK company is presently making a custom made tyre cover and my local Merc dealer will supply wheel nuts.
If I could find what I want in the UK I would buy it to day.
The internet wheel carriers are not designed for the latest hinge type.
They may fit but it's just not what I need, is this what it's come to, I have to settle for something I don't want.
We all spend a great deal of money on our vans, we all have different needs and wants and we buy accordingly that's all I'm trying to do.
On the bases we need to support UK industry perhaps we should all change our European made vans and buy British.
It's not a logical argument to say buy British especially when buying specialist parts. I wouldn't think many of these items are sold in the UK to make it worthwhile.

For £2000 you could easily find a specialist such as Motorcraft Adventure Developments at Doncaster who could custom make a wheel carrier for you van.

Any idea where to get these from? Ideally something reusable so can pull off when not needed.

Or is it more like your supplier is taking the piss.

As above, there is a cut-off below which it's down to the supplier. There are quite a few companies in the cycling supply world who are now refusing to despatch to the UK. More business to the UK I suppose!

Do you mean the cycling eu ? As far as I know nothing has changed with other countries it’s only the eu we have left.
