Just a reminder for those thinking of using P&O Ferries to cross over to the mainland.

Two years ago they sacked all their UK staff, so that they could employ non-EU/UK residents at less than half the cost
(It was a "Brexit benefit" to P&O management as the ships were no longer trading EU to EU, but let's not go there.)

It has now been found here they are not even paying half minimum wage.
The loophole they used as a 'short term' gain, has really paid off, as two years later, they are still getting away with it.

I promised two years ago, that as long as P&O Ferries remains managed by DP Word of Dubai, that I would not use their services, no matter how cheap they make the crossings.
I'm keeping to my promise.

Will YOU promise too?

(It should be noted P&O Cruises is under different management)

That is non news to be honest. They are paying ITF seaman rates which is the same as most of their competitors are doing. P&O cruises pay similarly, as do the other cruise companies.

I am no fan of P&O as they did the same thing to us in the commercial fleet in 1984 by flagging all the ships out and offering inferior contracts. It is nothing new and how the world’s merchant fleets have operated for many years

I've stuck to my guns so far re P&O Ferries, and will continue to do so for as long as is practically possible. (y)

19 month year 18000 miles UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Germany, Italy. Campsites and off Grid.
How do they compare to the Dover crossings in the pay stakes? Are Irish ferries paying a better wage? DFDS? I doubt it. I always use Irish ferries as generally I have sound them to cheapest of the three. Are you suggesting they pay their staff better? If so, how do they do it, especially consider whenever I go they seem to be empty.

I think the alternative was for P & O to go bust - would that have been any better for their staff?

The staff I see on these ferries seem happy - They could could easily get better paid jobs elsewhere if they wanted. Why do they stay if they are paid £5 an hour? Something doesn't make sense.

As you say flagged in a different Country so whatever the UK minimum wage is irrelevant in law.

As far as i can make out for as long as peoplecare happy to work for that much they will still be employing people.
Its only when the employment pool dries up that they will stuggle.
Ill generally use the cheapest supplier and unless i see their staff being flogged or abused ill carry on.

We don’t use P&O
We don’t use Tesla
We don’t use Amazon
We don’t use Dyson
We don’t use Google

I could go on but people would get bored we try and shop ethically and support companies that have an ethical base.

When do you check the firms out ?
When I go and buy something I just buy it never ever think who or what is selling it.

It may not affect you , but one day you, or one of your family, may be fired by video message and your job given to a low paid foreign agency worker..

Turn a blind eye and keep supporting this company ... it doesn't affect you.. your choice.

When this happened I vowed never to set foot on a PO ferry again.. I haven't and I wont..

First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me.

There are alternatives to Google such as duck duck go, the realist in me understands that I may cross paths with Google and that Amazon dominate the web storage market (AWS) but I won’t buy from Amazon and I won’t use Google deliberately

We won't use P&O again. It's not about the wages, it's about binning the UK workforce in the way they did. If we don't do something, however small, it'll continue to happen to others, including our own.
It's a constant erosion of works rights. If we keep allowing the likes of P&O to keep pushing the boundaries then it won't be long before we have no workers rights. I'm thinking about how it's going to be for our grandchildren and to be honest, it worries me.

I like duckduck go (obvious reasons) but find it very US centric but good for my AI stuff

They did the same to me in 1984, but the ITF actually have teeth and anyone violating it falls foul of port state control. Plus ships are subject to rigorous inspections as P&O found out earlier to their cost.

Here is the thing the bosses get paid more and more, the peasants as they see them get less and less and consumers want to pay as little as possible the casualty is the worker.
Why don't you go and tell those workers to leave then, see how much notice they take.

Think you may find for an overseas worker it is ‘sufficient’ money but my guess is none will be British or EU. Now if your ok with overseas workers taking on work at that pay in place of British and EU workers it’s a sad day so I agree with the OP we should just boycott the ships.

The whole country is over run with foreign workers, why should these be any different when they don't even get off here.
