THIS WAS AN ANSWER TO ANOTHERS QUESTION

You need a medical first and as per my tip elsewhere on the Forum, I recommend you use the excellent services of Broken Link Removed who will charge you £51, and you then have an agreed rendezvous point near you where they come with a doctor and an assistant in a kind of motorcaravan-cum-surgery and they talk you through all the form filling. You will need to take your latest specs prescription plus any other medical documents you may have relevant to any medical conditions. For me it took 15 mins. They checked my blood pressure and were very satisfied at 140/74. They fill in the forms and you send them off to DVLA (no fee required) and in about 10 days you get your full licence back. Most GPs charge rather more than £51. I recently heard of a similar outfit who charge £58.
Unless you have a cardiac/severe sight/diabetic condition it is not likely you will encounter any difficulty. The new licence will last for three years. It will be a plastic one and you will need to send your old plastic one with a photo if the one you have is no longer a true representation. And just to finish off, I also recently re-graded my motorhome to 3.8 tonnes after discovering that at 3.5 tonnes it had been classified as a diesel car and because of its emissions was costing me £500 a year in car tax....now I am back to Private HGV status costing just £165per annum. Massive thanks to SVTech for their help in getting all of this accomplished. Suggest you check out their website. Loads of useful info.

Used Doctors on Wheels 3 weeks ago. This is my 4th year with them and much better than waiting until my doctor can be bothered. I had heart stents last year and it didn't pose a problem with the mobile doctors. My examination was actually carried out in a clinic near Newcastle and not in the mobile unit.

My own GP charges £80. I have a complex medical history and would rather my own GP does the forms as she has all the information to hand.

I tend to agree, It may not be the cheapest way, but I feel that in 99% of cases, it is probably the best, they have access not only to your record, but likely knowledge of your particular situation too.

In My View, You should not be charged for this service under NHS Anyway!. Just Fund the NHS properly and stop giving billions to countries with nuclear projects, who support Jihadists"!!!

Will be interested to hear your feedback. The Daily Express article was scathing about rat infested lay-bys and Romanian doctors and cut price medical's. Obviously suggesting that they weren't real doctors. But nowadays what else will you get in a NHS hospital.
I take no pills have no ailments but do need reading glasses. So £51 will do me every three years to keep my C1. Especially as the Hymer is exactly the same size as the LeVoyageur but not as close to its maximum weight. Absolute nonsense to need this licence.
Please post your feedback after your visit.

Out of interest does anybody know how early this application can begin as I drive mainly on the continent I would prefer to not drive without a valid licence while waiting for DVLA. I just did a standard renewal online on a Friday and the licence arrived the following Wednesday.

As a concession at the beginning of the NHS to get them to become part of it, Doctors in General Practice were contracted in, not employed by the NHS. This continues to this day and most GP practices are small business in their own right, run by the partners. They charge for anything that is beyond the contract remit of the NHS. They charge the going rate under guidance from the General Medical Council but as business men they are not obliged to charge every customer the same price. The last charge recommendation I was told was £150 for a private medical.

I used driversmedicals.com, saw my wife's old doctor at a private surgery in Nottingham, £55 and a better examination than at my usual GP surgery.

My licence expired in April when I would have been in Spain, submitted application at the end of January with an explanatory letter and the new licence arrived just over a week later.

The last time I used my GP practice, I got a letter from the DVLA forbidding me to drive anything! Seems he cocked up the eyesight section but luckily a letter from my optician got that sorted. And it cost me a fortune.

Doctors-on-Wheels for me when my 70th comes up couple of years time. After, of course, my NHS-funded eyesight test!

Do you have to apply for the forms to DVLA OR WOULD YOUR OWN DOC HAVE THEM

I got them from the Post Office, which at the time held a stock. I understand you can now download them from the DVLA website, doubt you could find a post office these days!

Update :

Application for C1 received by DVLA 5th October

Having 'lost' my D4 (only found out after I phoned them 4 weeks later) DVLA medical team decided it had to contact my doctor on 6th December.

Then decided I needed a tread-mill ECG, which I did today carried out by 3 nurses and the doctor (- boy am I unfit!) - heart's OK though

The ECG print out is not sent to the DVLA, just the doctor's report.

Doctor said I was fit to drive and would send his report to the DVLA next week...............

.............3 months but I'll just be happy to finally get the licence

I recently phoned DVLA about the requirement to submit the existing licence with the application as I told them I was parked on the road in Europe and could be required to produce a licence, as the UK rule about being able to drive while the application process is ongoing might not be accepted.

They said that HGV drivers going to Europe have a similar problem and that as long I enclosed a letter explaining the reasons for retaining the existing licence that would be OK.

This I have done, so am just hoping the advice was correct - never sure with DVLA

Just had renewal notice from DVLA as 70 in March. Need to keep C1, noted "D4 Driver Medicals" operate nearby.
Rang them to get info on what's what. Booked in to the Holiday Inn nearby on Saturday morning 20th Jan. Cost £50, They carry D4 form but I've asked DVLA to send me the D2/D4 pack.
No known reasons to fail but I'll wait before booking the ferry to France.

Frustrated at the time it was taking, just before Christmas, I asked the DVLA to return my current licence - they did

My experience with doctors on wheels was very positive - well equipped & presented converted van, polite knowledgeable doctor - no probs!!

I figured that as someone who carried out the medicals for commercial drivers on a regular basis then said doctor (regardless of nationality) would "know the ropes" and conduct an unbiased fair medical covering all the legally required points. :)

Totally agree albeit I used D4Drivers and in local consulting rooms but same situation and more appealing to the Yorkshire folk as it's a £1.00 cheaper
