At 76, looking to change our 3500kg 2014 Rapido A class for a newer 4500kg 2019 costing £90000. Most companies won't quote, in fact the only one who quoted (Adrian flux ) was over £700 v our current £330.

Tried again saying I'd fit a tracker and got 4 quotes all over £600.

We only do 2500 miles and go for the highest excess and have umpteen years NCD. As others quote lower figures, like Minxy girl, is it simply because of my age?

Wow, hope I will still be thinking of buying a motorhome of any value in 3 years time.

sort of right, but I guess you are paying £40K+ to upgrade, why is the £300 insurance increase your concern 🤔
Nearly right. The real extra cost is the extra depreciation over say 5 years or about £15K. But an extra £300 for insurance plus £ 300 for tracker is an extra three grand over five years. Not a small sum.

... plus the opportunity cost of what the extra £40k+ of capital could earn invested in property or shares etc.. I suspect the high price and lack of willing companies might also be down to the small number of similar people in your situation. Insurers probably cluster around larger sectors of the market.
Maybe with a year under your belt, next year more will be willing to consider it 👍

It seems to me that if you can only find one firm to even quote then you don't have a great deal of choice.

I pay almost that at 71 for a £25000 campervan, a lot depends on postcode.
My current insurance went up from 300ish to over 700 with Comfort but I got £330 from c&mc. Yours seems too high but then it's all very individual.

Thanks for all your replies. It looks more like it's due to the van value than my age. If I buy the van £730 from a. flux is better than 630 elsewhere and having to fit a tracker.

I know I keep coming up with nfu which is worth a try but in this case I don't think they will be much better.

In my family my parents are Always SKIing. Spending the Kids Inheritance.
As the Nike advert says Just Do It!
Well our two are both now set up better than we were, so why not. They'll still get the house. (Not to mention the use of the MH if they want to)

Money in a bank is likely to cost you to keep it there very shortly, in fact one bank is charging as of today.
I would not think of advising you, however the alternatives are not that attractive.
I hope my children like debt, because that is my aim.

I assume that you have kept up your C1 driving licence entitlement to allow you to drive a vehicle over 3500kgs. If your 76 then you must have reapplied twice so far and submitted medicals and eyesight tests?

With specialist Motorhome insurance Class of Motorhome can affect the price.
My mates last van was a Carthago C I Tourer Comfort put it in the same class as the up market Carthago's & charged a £1000, following year they had reclassified it and it was £400.
He now has an Carthago E line (130k), Comfort £1000, NFU £530, no tracker or alarm required

Surely it's by concerning myself with not paying over the odds for stuff like insurance etc that leaves me with enough dosh to buy a better van.
You can't really ask us. It absolutely depends on how much YOU like the new van. Is it worth it to you? 😊
