Whilst the DVLA are "beggering about". This could allow you to keep driving.

Section 88 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

To continue driving under Section 88, you must meet all of the following criteria:•Your doctor must have told you that you are fit to drive. If your doctor is unsure about how a medical condition affects driving, they should refer to ‘Assessing fitness to drive – a guide for medical professionals’ atwww.gov.uk/dvla/fitnesstodrive•You have held a valid driving licence (see *below) and only drive vehicles you have applied for on your current application and were entitled to drive on your previous licence. •If you hold a Group 2 (bus or lorry) licence, your entitlement has not been suspended, revoked or refused by a traffic commissioner.•You meet any conditions that were specified on your previous licence that still apply.•DVLA has received your correct and complete application within the last 12 months.•Your last licence was not revoked or refused for medical reasons.•You are not currently disqualified from driving by a court.•You were not disqualified as a high risk offender on or after 1 June 2013 (a high risk offender is a driver convicted of a serious drink driving offence).* this licence can be a full GB licence, a GB provisional licence, a European Community licence, a Northern Ireland licence, a British external/British Forces licence or an exchangeable licence.2

While the DVLA is completing medical investigations to decide whether a licence can be issued, we cannot tell you if Section 88 applies to you. You and your doctor are in the best position to consider the Section 88 criteria and to decide whether you should drive while you are waiting for a licence to be issued.Section 88 cover is valid until any of the following apply:•You receive your new driving licence, (as that will cover you to drive).•Your application is refused or licence revoked by DVLA. You will receive a letter from DVLA if this is the case.•Your application is more than a year old.•You have been disqualified from driving since your application was sent to the DVLA.

If they are using someone like D4 drivers they usually have forms and fill them in for you.
I used them only did medical and eye test filled the rest out myself , on D4 every page but just read the notes , also had D2 to fill in but again read the notes . Don’t give in it’s just to see if your alert I think ???

We both had medicals at GPs he matched the DforDrivers type thing for price. I also had an eye test at Specsavers as I know that is who DVLA use and my prescription was too long ago to use.
that was on 28th November Both have our licences back, and neither of us lost out on next due date. Still expires on my birthday. in 3 years and a months time.

I shudder to think what our GP charges they charged my wife just over £30 just for a brief confirmation letter to renew her Blue Badge earlier this year.

if you think there are delays contact the DVLA and ask what is happening. Three years ago when I renewed there was a medical query which was referred to my GP. DVLA initially said they had not got a reply but later that that had got a reply but it was the wrong information. On the other hand my GP practice were adamant they had sent "absolutely the correct scan ages ago" After some further gentle but persistent prodding it turned out that a GP secretary had sent a 3 month old CT scan of my jaw instead of a 10 year old MRI scan of my head. The doctors ignored follow up letters because they were convinced they had already sent the right information but once sorted out the licence came through without further delay.

So if there are delays particularly about medical responses be proactive and manage the information interface between DVLA and your GP/medical advisers.

Hello all C1'ers
My C1 license renewal due soon,
Can someone give a clear "yes/no" answer to the following,
(as I cannot decipher the answer from the DVLA web page)
is the eye test requirement, exactly the same for
the standard car, AND the C1 category license ?

No, the C1 is more stringent. The 20 metres is the same for both but the C1 eyesight tests has visual acuity requirements in addition. The full C licence even more stringent.

The eyesight requirements for C1 require you to be able to read a number plate from 20 metres, in good light wearing your glasses or contact lenses. The additional requirements are:
  • Have a visual acuity of at least 6/7.5 (0.8) in the better eye
  • Have a visual acuity of at least 6/60 (0.1) in the worse eye
  • This can be achieved with or without corrective lenses
  • If glasses are worn for driving the lenses must not have a corrective power of more than +8 dioptres

Thanks for clarifying that,
Although "specsavers" are DVLA approved
the local branch were not up to speed on car versus C1 criteria
so this forum is far better a source of info
"from those that are in the same category"
thanks again

The eye specialist at my local hospital didn't know what a C1 or a C meant. He thought the HGV Class 1 and 2 were still in place!!!!!! I did try to gently tell him but he insisted he was correct and no one had ever informed him of any changes. I gave up at that point and am not sure if I should make a formal complaint as he did sign the forms and I did check my eye sight test more than met the criteria.

That was the same man who told my friend he had cancer of the optic nerve and there was no treatment. This was without checking if there was anyone with him or signposting him to MacMillan Support (in the same hospital). My friend asked for a second opinion and received treatment - he has been cancer free for 20 years now.

nicholsong DVLA require for some things that you see your named consultant, so probably Puddleduck had no option.

Exactly and no choice of who you see or where as there is in England. There is one consultant here and that is who you see - unless you are lucky enough to have an out of hours emergency when you go nearly 50 miles up to Edinburgh. The follow up is still with Dr Out-of-Date though.

What an horrendous situation,
Although it is not for everyone
I think you should bite the bullet and make a formal complaint
this individual need re training and brought up to date
PLEASE do not leave it to someone else to do
You will be doing the right thing
and will be helping others too

I'm a bit reluctant as last time I made a complaint (different department) it was not kept confidential and my treatment suffered as a result. The man in question is past retirement age and no one has applied for the vacancy which is why he is still in post. If he leaves it is around a 100 mile round trip with little public transport so not viable for elderly people.

Rock and hard place...........

Hi did they do your Eyesight as well ? I am thinking about getting them to do it next time as Docters make so many mistakes filling in their part of form and cost twice as much as your people.

I had a prescription from the optician about a month before, the doctor just accepted that and just did a basic eye test

let my c1 go, just downrated the van back to 3500, didn't want to take the risk C.O.P.D.
I went that route too with my ambulance conversion. Seemed the easyist way. Does limit choice for the future though

That’s it, medical form completed, optician completed the eye sight reqirement, posted today (signed for at £2.11p) wonder how long it will take over the festive season. Fingers crossed.
Hi StewartJ, If it's a straightforward 70 renewal, there shouldn't be any problems I had my medical with D4 drivers, sent my application off and had a response in 10days but because of my medication etc, It took 10 weeks but you should be sorted in 3 or 3 weeks.

Your reply fills me with dread Barry, I don't have any medical issues so lets hope its a straightforward exercise on their part.
10 days when I did mine..If the forms are filled in 100% correct it's no problem,,one mistake then delays. My doctor filled it all in for me and i just had to sign each page..BUSBY.
