Since I've been a member I have noticed that some members ask why others invest in a new motorhome. Others seem to question why others pay over 20K for a motorhome. I've never had a new house or car and only got my first new bike when I was 50. Have always been careful with money but as I approach a certain age with the rest of my motorhome career limited to an expected 10 years I have decided to buy a new motorhome...because I can.

Someone has to buy new vans otherwise some of us wouldn't be able to find low mileage, hardly used bargains years down the line.....

Freedom of choice - we have bought new, second hand and down right knackered vehicles over the years depending on funds and circumstances - our money - our choice, no right or wrong

Forgot to say if you do buy a new van forget about the extra's / options like solar / sat dish etc

Get the dealer to fit you a 3D Printer and you can make all your own replacement parts

I guess its only people who have never had a new van or maybe cannot afford one that would say that. Also a misnomer, of course you do lose out as the van is no longer new but not 20%, its a bit like buying a pre-registered car its still new with just delivery mileage but you are just the 2nd owner, bu you do not get a 20% discount!

I've just won the lottery so I'll go out and buy a second hand motorhome. Sums it up for me.

Nothing quite like driving out of a showroom in a new car or van. I've bought a couple of new vans, but doubt I would buy another new. But to be fair, more to do with money than anything else. Three to five years old is the sweet spot for us, any important issues have surfaced and been fixed and there are likely quite a few extras on board. We then renew every single item of soft furnishing, anything not wood or metal gets replaced, bed, carpets, curtains, valences linoloeum, add a new loo and we're good to go with a new van.

Meanwhile you do know that "new van smell" we all adore is carcinogenic

Main reason for buying new is that I can't find what I want second hand in terms of van size, internal layout, base vehicle spec and a reasonable age and thus environmental efficiency.

Last van was new and almost right. This van is the same age, but a big step up in quality. Could have bought a very nice new van for what it cost but it suits perfectly

Would be scared of having new van in case we scratched it/ bumped into something.... too much responsibility! Also people might want to STEAL it- oh the loss and sorrow! Our old , trusty, familiar pre scratched one. Also- worst of all- if we got a new one what would we say to the old one? Her heart would break , as would ours (# reasonIamdriving9yearoldcar)

Think it would depend on how much usage it would get.I don't use my van (self build )much as other half not a big fan-but if we used it as our main holiday or if I was on my own I would spend a lot of cash on a van. Reason I built my own was I couldn't get the layout I wanted unless I bought new/nearly new so my low usage didn't justify it.Paying for a new van needs to justify the use of it.

We put a deposit down on a new van last Sunday (hopefully picking up Thursday) and when we got home we both had a bit of buyers remorse. Had we done the right thing, can we afford it, do we really want it etc. A little while later I was sitting n the bath (well it was Sunday) and heard on the news Tommy Smith the footballer had just died at age 74, though we are not yet that old it rather convinced me that yes it was expensive but yes we had done the right thing and we will enjoy the van hopefully for many year to come.

We bought new as we couldn’t find what we wanted second hand plus we didn’t have to find as much money as the moho went through the business and we got the vat back,granted when we sell mr vat man gets a chunk but we still saved.

I more I read these multiple threads about buying old/secondhand, pre-200? etc the more I think that our N&B Arto 69(2003) 50,000 miles, now with us for 10 years will be with us for another 10 years.

Why not? 2.8Jtd engine and 2003 N&B build quality. Suits me.

I could go out and buy a new Concorde/Phoenix etc., but why the hassle, the wait, the fiddling with warranty bits etc. when I have a good comfortable MH here in the yard?

I have never bought a new motorhome. Present one was a year old and I have now had it 10 years. I have only once bought a new car, and that was only because I couldn't get the

variant I wanted second hand. I had it for two days before some scroat keyed the bonnet. I had that for eight years and it actually worked out quite good value.
As others have said, we wouldn't have any good second hhand vehicles if nobody bought new so good on them.​
