Inside of the hold of a ferry arriving in Palma Majorca this week

Storms in the Med can be worse than the Bay of Biscay...........

We won't be going on a long distance one again. Went to Bilbao in April, very worrying, didn't like it.

And subject to very very poor marine insurance

On the ferry over here, everything is tied down with huge chains.

Few chains would have stopped that but decks don’t seem to have any locating holes for them. Not like the cross channel ferries.

Chaining down, is a lottery. It is usually in the hands of the Chief Officer who many times had to call out the crew in a seaway to start lashing down, when the predicted weather turned nastier. The worse sea`s are still in the North Sea. Not for size particularly but for the frequency. Pitching and rolling at the same time. Med Storms are nasty, but mostly it`s a case of people have been "caught out" by not taking notice.

I wonder how they get them back on their wheels?
Having watched numerous heavy/HGV recovery TV programs which all seem to need a miriad of winch trucks and cranes but there's no possibility of that in the confines of the vehicle deck.

Put them on skids and drag out

did ferries to santander and bilbao many times in a truck and the crew always chained, you used to get a telling off if chaining rings on the truck were not painted bright yellow

Now they often use Large airbags under the Trailer sidings. combined with pulling blocks on the chassis.
