At moment we have Tom Tom Go Camper which is about three years old. Used to be really reliable but lately turns on and off and map updates etc are expensive.

We are looking for a Sat Nav that we can put dimensions of MH In etc as don’t want to be sent down a too narrow road. Also would like free map updates, speed cameras and live traffic.

Any recommendations gratefully received.
Thanks

Youll get several different replies. Most ppl will reply with what they have or have had so............

Garmin 660 if you want one of the better ones or you just go for a £50 chinese lorry sat nav and know it will last a couple of years.

I got a cheap tablet from Aldi and use the Igo app. We tried a few different apps (many are free to try before you buy) and I liked the Igo one the best. I bought the European Edition and can add and up date maps as and when I want. Updates for anything you buy are free (as long as the app is supported obviously). A few years back the motorway mapping / views were improved. I change the voice from time to time so I don't get bored with it :) It takes the vehicle dimensions (I had to tell it the motorhome was a truck) and also has maps for cycling and walking but I don't know how good they are.

The cheap Chinese one lasted 13 months and the battery started to get hot when it was in use so it was disposed of.

Truck satnavs will take you miles out of your way to avoid, what to me are pretty towns and villages, via motorways and dual carriageways, fine if you enjoy that, but not for me.

I use Garmin units.

Co-Pilot sends you down silly little roads no matter what dimensions you put in it. I now use Google Maps and Waze, both free with good traffic info. No charge for map updates. Spend your money on a radio head unit with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto instead, then you don’t need to clutter up your dashboard with extra screens.

I'd recommend going for a tablet then you can put on whatever system you prefer, we've used tablets for years now and find them much better than stand alone sat nav units.

we have the Avtex tourer 2, so far so good. It does err on the side of caution which can take you a bit out of the way but if I know where I am I don't use it and if not then I'm happy to follow it.

Maybe not new roads but quite a few alterations & restrictions...
Then there are corrections to previous mapping data...
So regular updates are not unreasonable.

The un-updated piece of rubbish which came with my Citroen regularly had me driving over 'fields'.

Had a Garmin 760 LMTD for a few years,

Traffic info failed last year, ok not a great issue.

However.....

Latest updates have changed things....

now routes with either very unrealistic routes or reasonable ones with a surprise,.

recent journeys show Garmin routing through a lay-by????

and taking the 50m detour to avoid an A road of a few miles.

Not sure if related to the recent Garmin hack so hoping for an update/error correction soon.

having to put multiple way points in to get it go sensiblely.

think it might be time to replace, keeping an eye on any recommendations,

good luck, keep us posted on your decision.

keep safe

In addition to the Garmin I use maps.me on a tablet, it works offline so doesn't need data.
Incidentally when abroad now we really only need the satnav for the first and last mile - after being directed along stupid roads we now follow the signs to the next town.

We've got a Garmin 760Lm which we bought for £30 on Gumtree, the old boy selling it was really nice & posted it to us for free!

We used it last weekend & I was very impressed, map updates are free, it warns as you approach speed limits in towns or countryside, warns of speed camera areas, tells you the speed your travelling at & pings as you approach the speed limit, huge big screen, whats not to like?

Oh & its compatible with the Garmin BC40 wifi reversing camera as well as accepts voice commands.

Our Tomtom routing software is just bonkers, it's always wanting you to turn off up side roads, I ignore it now and we use sign posts and Google maps for our exact location.

I bought a Tom Tom Truckers Sat Nav and rely on it completely, never taken me down a 'wrong' road or gone miles out of the way, lifetime updates included but it was £360!

I always struggle with why people need 'updates' so often ? It isn't as though they build new roads that quickly.
Oh if only it was that simple ... I recall going to a few places where the one-way systems had been redone so we were sent round in circles as the sat nav kept had a hissy fit thinking we were going the wrong way down streets!
The un-updated piece of rubbish which came with my Citroen regularly had me driving over 'fields'.
Perhaps it thinks you have a Unimog or tank ... or perhaps a rattley old tractor?

Got a Garmin Camper 780 recently. I am very impressed with it.

Got 2 very fancy expensive Sat Navs in 2 of our cars, got a £60 NAVRUF off Amazon, it's better than both of the cars Sat Navs. Just sayin like.

Hi,

I have had mixed results with iGO maps, some good and some bad.

Could any of the XGody users comment on how self configurable it is with POI`s and the likes. I like to be able to search for POI`s near me, along a route, near a destination, etc, and also to be able to have the POI icons display on the map in real time.

TIA

Forget it.

Buy a map.

The people who say they are impressed with their satnavs have just paid £300 for it.......well,you would ,wouldn’t you?

Absolutely the biggest waste of money you could ever find. Forget it. Live life, use your eyes and your brain, with a map.

That's rather disingenuous to all those who use sat navs ... we find both a sat nav and a map have their uses and wouldn't be without either.

I managed the last 2 years on my £70 tom tom but I've missed an update and apparently can't update it now

So ive just bought a cheap truck unit of ebay for £45 .....Will see how it works out and keep the tom tom as back up.

Bought a second hand TomTom 6000 Trucker off Ebay. European maps and free lifetime updates and Traffic. Well pleased with it so far. We have TomTom 5000 in the car so it means I don't get confused with different makes. I'm old and retired, so I'm easily confused :nerd:
