All booked for Le shuttle, cruising down the M11 when BANG this happened. Luckily just near one of those police turn-off’s. Now back home after AA fitted the spare wheel.
New tyre and damage check Monday, rebooked for weds morning on Le shuttle.
MORAL is always carry a spare.

Scary stuff when this happens on any size vehicle...never mind a motorhome!

Oh heck, looks like you got away relatively lightly though, would have made a bigger mess of the rear I think, what tyre was it? glad all OK and enjoy the trip when you make it over the water.

It was a Davanti 440 DX440. All wheels have the same. These we’re all newish tyres. I will buy another one. AA man says it looks like you ran over something sharp.
Amazing damage to plastic trim mainly.

Snap!
Happened to us yesterday.
But on the A43 in France, heading for the alps.

Fortunately we were only 2km from an aire so we limped there on the hard shoulder with the hazards on and changed the wheel.
Abandoned plans of crossing the alps as the brakes had overheated en route to the aire and didn’t want to push our luck so went through the Frejus tunnel instead.
Now heading towards Bologna where we may stay the night before finding a tyre place tomorrow morning.
Edit: my driver had only recently commented that there was vibration coming from one of the rear wheels and he’d look at it next time we stopped.

Been there, done that on a busy A1. Did £1200 worth of damage to the van taking out the wheel arch liner, insulation that was behind that, plumbing and electrical wiring. Age was probably the cause. :( (of the tyre, not me).

Exactly the same type of damage. Probably quite expensive to fix. Local body shop check tomorrow and of course a new tyre. Try fixing that with an aerosol 🤔
Phil
Looks like we’ve got away with it lightly 🙁 Apart from the tyre and grey waste valve, there’s only very slight damage to the under side of the floor behind the wheel arch which is easily fixable (or so my “man who does these things” tells me).
Good luck at the body shop, hopefully no organs will have to be sacrificed 😣

Food for thought for those that don't carry / will never need a spare wheel.!!

On the bright side at least it was on this side of the water and sortable ,on the other it would have been worse with you probably having to sort it out in Franglais. (y)

Hopefully there is not too much damage.
How old was the tyre?
The blown one was showing 23/17. The other front is the same. I might buy two just for peace of mind.

Phil, get them to check the brake pipes. I had a similar blow out on my front nearside wheel. The flying bits of tyre caught the brake pipe and kinked it badly. Had to be replaced, which was costly because of the wheel arches that Hymer had installed on my A class.

Looks horrific. Lucky it was controllable. It's never happened to me, just about to to do a 2k trip myself, cross fingers!

Do you think the type and make of tyre was an issue - as they are not camper tyres and much cheaper?
Are they specified for the weight of your van?
It could have been a sharp object that caused it but I wouldn't have those tyres on my motorhome.

I like to keep a record of catastrophic failures of motorhome tyres - not punctures.
Most seem to be due to the excessive age of the tyre - or non standard motorhome tyres.

It's a 120 rated tyre so certainly good for the weight on the front of a Fiat (y)

Sorry it’s delayed your trip Phil, hope it all works out ok. We’ve have 3 tyres blow over a 48 hour trip home back from Morocco…story for another time!
