Hi All
I know that the answer is NO!
But i cannot find anything to confirm it.
Can I put a passenger in a towed car (On an A frame) on a journey?
The car is not broken down but simply being towed to a destination

:welco:
Normally I would say there is no such thing as a stupid question, you just proved me wrong.

Passengers aren't allowed in towed vehicles, there is one exception a Bailey employee in a Bailey caravan in Bristol, police gave them permission for test purposes.

So you got me searching for the rules as I have nothing better to do, but I don't think I am going to find it in black and white as A frame rules are ambiguous enough to start with BUT it is illegal to travel in a caravan being towed if that helps.

You might try searching "is it legal to travel in a 4 wheel trailer"

I thought we may have gained an extra 2 travel seats when we had the scooter on the back... After all, no seat belt required on bikes ??

I do not think there is a specific rule against it but your are not allowed to travel in any car van or trailer that is not designed to carry passengers.

A woman got injured on the way to a wedding in a tractor trailer, the driver was done for using an unsuitable trailer and not for the fact that she was in a trailer

I suspect maybe there are no stupid questions as the replies might have stopped you doing it but it would definitely be a stupid thing to do even if it were legal the towed car would have no control and if it did come loose no brakes. I have spent many a happy hour being towed in a glider behind power aircraft would I do it with no means of release on a 10ft rope no way Hose !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's a very interesting question actually, I'm just thinking of bendy buses, is the back half a trailer?

I think in bendy buses the engine is in the back half. Therefore it’s not technically a trailer. It’s pushing the bit in front.

It's not hanging on by just a 50mm ball. Buses come under separate regulations, e.g. seat belts not required.

Every car I've ever towed has had a driver in it! As long as the passenger is at the wheel and has the correct licence to drive it then.... maybe '\

The Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 defines an “articulated bus” as “a bus so constructed that—
(a) it can be divided into two parts, both of which are vehicles and one of which is a motor vehicle, but cannot be so divided without the use of facilities normally available only at a workshop; and
(b) passengers carried by it can at all times pass from either part to the other.”

Note paragraph "b" - in a towed car situation, the passengers cannot pass between either part of tha vehicles involved. As Lenny says, buses are treated rather differently in the legislation

I am wondering about the Showmans Guild, they are legally allowed to tow 2 trailers, one of which is normally a "Living Van." I remember the old 2 axle drawbar caravans going past with the chimney smoking and grubby faces pressed against the windows.

The police let you sit in your car when its being towed
seen it used on the A1

Having been towed in a broken down vehicle many times over the years, I would suggest "why would you want to?"

I cant understand why “a frame rules are ambiguous”

Can it tow a 4-5t MH?

I believe the towing rig is only good for 2.5 tonnes but the goldwing engine is good for a lot more than that, It's a flat 6 1800 cc I believe it's good for around 125 Bhp and 170 Nm torque (claimed).

..... but on an A Frame, Jim? :)

I've towed with a solid bar....required a driver to steer same with a rope

I can't Honestly see why an a frame would be any different.

And given the fact the old bill in the UK generally haven't a clue about a frames I can't see you being stopped and asked either.

Whoever was in it would have to keep their hands away from the steering wheel though or they could lose a finger or two
