Several years now
So we left Adge this morning at 7am to travel up to Chalon-sur-Soane. The Sat nav says 5 hours via A7 so off we tootle. No warning signs on the A7 overheads but at J17 Les Tourrettes (very appropriate as it turns out) the full motorway was closed !! So ALL the motorway traffic was diverted via the N7 up to the next junction for the A7 J16.

If you look at google maps you will see that the distance is about 11km. But the whole journey was on Country type roads. Stop start ALL the way literally bumper to bumper!! When we eventually neared J16 we found that there was one traffic light, operating on it's normal 4 way sequence to let through both the local traffic and ALL of the A7 motorway traffic. So this one traffic light it was effectively controlling all the traffic being forced off the motorway 11km behind it.

So have a guess how long that 11km took to drive ?? SIX, YES SIX Tourrette hours 6 !!!!

All because some cretin in the traffic section thought it would be a good idea to close the whole motorway for repairs without checking if the alternative route could take the vehicles. If Monsieur or Madam Cretin had actually driven this route he / she may have thought, hmm that traffic light might be a choke point and made arrangements to alter it's sequence at least !!

Oh dear. I feel your pain. It can only get better!

Just think of all that French countryside you have just driven through ?

Just trying to remind you of the delays that await you when you get back over the other side of the water.:LOL::LOL:

Lots of French people need thrashing. They have more than their quota of arsehole drivers, makes the average uk drivers look good. I’m here right now and had a few near misses already.
Phil

You don't have to come, it's not compulsory ... never had any near misses in GB ... near misses are not accidents.

Really? Maybe the wrong country was chosen for your vacation as in all our travels we've found the average French driver is no better or worse than any other nationality.

They are definitely worse
They all drive on the wrong side for starters

Sadly the same issue occurs in the UK. IF they have reason to close the A1035, in the first 5 miles from Beverley, and they have, The diversion is Via HULL to the South 19Miles OR Minor roads Via Great Driffield to the North 28Miles. They are the nearest 2 River crossings.

One big question is "is it you causing the near misses due to your poor standards" seen many a Brit doing very silly things this side of the water.

There are some cr4p drivers in every country. I don’t they are any better or worse in the UK or France, but they are spread out a bit more in France.

Just about to sample the delights of the M3-M25-M20(if it's open) on Wednesday afternoon for a 0200 ferry. don't suppose that will be a bundle of joy either

Love the word CRETIN ????

Well just for you I'll use it a bit more.

I imagine that the French Toll roads Management are usually competent and therefore would IN ADVANCE wonder what might happen to all the traffic going North on the A7, for instance, if they had to shut the whole northbound section between two junctions. They may send people out to see if the road(s) that the the diverted onto traffic could actually handle the thousands of extra vehicles that would suddenly be using them.

So the meeting could go like this at Toll Rd HQ, "So Monsieur Cretin, did you check out the potential diversion roads which we'd need to call upon if we had to totally shut the A7 northbound one Sunday morning at J17 ?

"Indeed I did boss, went out in my Cretin mobile and the good news is that there is only one set of traffic lights on the whole road".

"Monsieur Cretin you are a star, have a bonus" !!!

Next meeting, several days later, "Cretin your fired" !!!!

Quite well used then next to the word French ... apparently!

Autres questions posées
Where did the term cretin come from?
1779, from French crétin (18c.), from Alpine dialect crestin, "a dwarfed and deformed idiot" of a type formerly found in families in the Alpine lands, a condition caused by a congenital deficiency of thyroid hormones, from Vulgar Latin *christianus "a Christian," a generic term for "anyone," but often with a sense of " ...

Note: Ok I'm French , but mainly a Blackfoot from Algeria...:moon2:

Travelled the other way today in record time so did not have time to test TV or do the washing up

Actually Ian, his point about a near miss isn’t an accident would have been an accident if not for my reflex avoidance tactics.
I always enjoy France though, all things considered.
Phil

You have an apparent poor view of many French drivers and an excellent view of your own skills. Well done for avoiding a terrible incident.

She clearly no lady!

We've been back in Kent for six days and are already getting stressed out with the roads, we've seen more over worked, in a rush commuters in Kent over those six days than four months traveling through Europe.

Agree with Allanm about drivers being spread out more over the water..
