Nice story Keith. Fact is we all read the scary stories and they make us wary and apprehensive (a good thing) Scary stories are as old as man himself, keeping us inline and ensuring we don't stray too far or off the path at all.

However, in my experience when travelling; you are 100 times more likely to be the victim of random acts of kindness, than you are of ever becoming a victim of crime. (y)

I have an open mind on gassing .

When I can read of the Bolivian rape case 2009 we're a vets knock out spray for cattle was used to incapacitate women by spraying through their windows and then attacking them while they sleep . 130 women attacked and 9 men imprisoned .

This is what you refer to I think

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2009/sep/10/mennonites-rape-bolivia

I note that in the article the use of a narcotic spray was "speculation"

"Uncertainties abound. There is speculation that the alleged rapists used a narcotic spray to drug their victims and members of their families. "I remember smelling the spray," recalls Knodel. "It smelled terrible. It used to give me a horrible headache, make me vomit, feel dizzy. It was very hard to wake up in the mornings." His sister Ángelita is standing barefoot next to him beneath the porch, looking concerned. "I cannot remember a thing," she says in a faltering voice. Her mother thinks that she herself was raped several times but can only remember pain and seeing torchlight one night. Her family are still waiting for the results of forensic tests.

When the women and girls woke up in pain, or naked, some wives blamed their husbands. Some said it was the work of the devil. The same story is repeated at farm after farm. Two miles from the Knodels' property is the isolated farm of their cousins, the Neufeldts. They believe the rapists broke in several times, attacking the mother Isabel and her daughters, Inés and Sancha. "I've felt presences over and over again," says Isabel. "One night I felt something on my leg, but I couldn't wake up. I just managed to open one eye but fell asleep instantly again. A couple of mornings I woke up with my body aching, and really, really tired."

All seems rather iffy to me for all the reasons given in this and previous threads about gassing

The Russian Security Services did actually tried pumping a narcotic gas into a hostage siege situation. 130 people died

This is why no one in a motorcaravan has ever been a victim of a theft derived gas attack.

But that was an error in using the quantity of gas if I remember ?

The case of the gassing of the women is estimated to be hundreds over a number of years and involved court cases and evidence and imprisonment so as said I have an open mind and think outside the box on the type gasses available to people ?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-14688458

You can buy narcotics gas alarms for leisure industry now ?

No, you just can't randomly render people unconscious safely. One of the biggest risks of surgery in a modern hospital is the anesthesia, when administered by a highly trained and qualified anaesthetist.

The evidence from the Royal College of Anaesthetist suggests the opposite. Equally the defence also suggested the attacks could have been carried out by the Devil!!..

Under the circumstances the opinion of the RCA holds more sway

We have been offering Narcotic gas detectors since 1995 when these stories started appearing

It was only after extensive investigation and double checking stories, establishing fact from fiction that I came to the only logical opinion available, Gas attacks cannot happen

Exactly this. My wife works in a pre-operative assessment unit for local hospitals. Quite a lot of older (and some not so old) patients are actually refused surgery and referred back to their consultants and/or GPs for further measures to attempt to improve their health sufficiently to allow the operation to proceed, because the risk of death due to administration of anaesthetic under controlled conditions is considered too great.

Yet we're supposed to believe that untrained individuals are administering what might be unregulated substances in totally uncontrolled conditions, managing to render all vehicle occupants unconscious and yet not a single death or instance of permanent health effects seems to have ever occurred.

With that sort of luck, why would they bother trying to steal from a MH when they could win the lottery every week?

To return to the ‘Gas’ element of this thread.....

Let me say this for the last time.........

It is simply NOT POSSIBLE !!!

I have just discussed the matter with my son who is a Consultant Anaesthetist and he said the equipment, materials, time and specialist skills needed to administer gas in a manner that would be effective is just not possible and that the likely outcome would be fatal......... ever heard of people being gassed to death in their Motorhome? NO!

Save your breath (well fingers anyway) guys ... if people want to believe it's possible no amount of evidence to the contrary will convince them otherwise ... anyone who wakes up and realises they've been robbed/burgled whilst asleep will obviously feel awful as the adrenalin kicks in and they realisation of what's happened hits them, that' the reason IMV for their feeling cr@p, heady etc but its so much easier to blame being gassed than admitting they actually 'happily' slept through it all.

What would he know compared with a neighbour's brother-in-law's friend ?

I will go with your son and his Professional College who has written a paper on the subject.

It is simply NOT POSSIBLE, as you say.

Just read your sad report. I know how you must feel. It sounds just like what happened to us about 7 years ago, except in a motorway aire in Belgium at the start of our holiday. We were new to motorhoming and thought we would be safe with 11 lorries around us! We were shocked for days after the robbery. Couldn't even talk. Thought of giving in and going home. Then we met a lovely couple on their way home. They gave us their satnav to use as ours had been stolen and just said to send it back to them after our holiday.
Since that time we have met many, many lovely people and had numerous happy, memorable motorhome holidays. Yes, we have learnt lessons and fitted extra security devises. Just keep vigilant. Remember, nil carborundum illegitimi.

Too many dogs and bad owners.
Yes, I actually agree, but do get uptight with generalisations about Dog ownership. It’s the old story about a relative FEW who give the BAD name. The vast majority of owners are responsible, In the recent past I have actually "cleaned up" Dog Poo which has nothing whatever to do with MY pet. It’s like saying ALL motor home users drive off with their grey tap open.

The RSPCA have been banging on for years about re-introducing Dog Licences. That would ONLY impact on responsible ownership, Like, as with GUN`s, the Criminal element would STILL not comply!.

I agree, to have your home-MH, house, whatever, is a terrible thing (ours was ‘done’ on a CL in England) but you must differentiate between an Aire de Camping Car, in France and an Aire de Repos.
We would never overnight in a service area regardless of country.
You need better locks and a good alarm!
If thieves want something there’s not a lot you can do to stop them, they will find a way!

The answer to stop getting gassed is to leave your windows open so all the gas will go out the windows.

The first time I overnighted in a French motorway services area (50 years ago) it was in a car. We had to slip our suit cases underneath the car to create enough space inside. We weren't the only ones doing it, either. Nothing seemed to get pinched. Shame about the change.

Ordered a pair of Thatcham front door dead locks for our van. You hear time and time again how easy the Sevel lock can be opened. Makes you wonder if it's worth 'locking' with the damage they do.

They hopefully won't bother trying when they see the extra key holes.

You actually woke up after hearing noises.... And after a few drinks to? I'm surprised you're being taken seriously on this thread. ;)

I like your thought process but I had been a 'light' sleeper for some years because, at that time, we had an epileptic dog who travelled with us and with or without a few drinks I was always aware of my surroundings.
My ears were fine tuned to the first sign of him having a fit and any noise that wasn't expected had me moving like a coiled spring in his direction to try and make sure he didn't damage himself as he thrashed around during the fit.
So any unexpected sound, in or out of the Motorhome, as in my story, had me wide awake and ready for any action that might be needed.
Since his passing my sleep has been rarely interrupted once fast asleep - the 'new' dog sleeps well without any worries - and so do I now ....
Hope this helps clear this up for you ......

:D :D :D :D
