A "mechanical" code that is needed to order spare keys from Fiat, and an "electronic" code which is - together with the red key - needed to perform maintenance on the immobilizer system. The red key's main purpose however is to reprogram the immobilizer system to accept new keys.

But best ignore ignore this cos;) I’m not a lad

We have a 2014 van
No red key
Have been able to get keys cut and programed ok

It's a long time since I've heard red key mentioned and yes we do have one, but they seem to be a thing of the past.

My 1999 MH. Red key, yes. Think they were discontinued once there was an ECU you could program as an immobiliser rather than being separate.

It’s only got black keys so my information was wrong I did think so thanks all

Several years ago I traded in a motorhome but was told they would deduct £200 from the trade in figure if I did not have the red key. I duly handed the van over with red key. It seemed reasonable to insist they gave me the red key for my purchase, they looked high and low for it and eventually had to agree to install a new ignition lock with red key for me. An expensive exercise I believe. A couple of years later when investigating a heating fault I found the original engine key hidden and taped up. Glad they dropped this arrangement, it hardly improves security if people keep the key on the vehicle, a clever thief could have found it even if the salesman couldn’t.

Never mind red, if only Fiat would provide 2 black keys for the Ducato not just 1. SCROOGE or what.

My 2013 Fiat MH came with 2 keys, one that does the central locking and starting, the other is just a blank key. Does anyone know if the blank key should work on the immobiliser and start the engine? I know I can just try but the van is in storage and I am now curious after reading this thread. Our local Timpsons in Asda's carpark has just quoted £70 if they can do it but need the key to put in their machine to see if they can read it.

Hi yes it will start your van as mine do the key is a black with no buttons

Tried it as you say it starts the van but opening the doors with it does not turn off the alarm as that's on the central locking. So will need a spare with buttons.
