But Doctors smoke CamelsReal men ride camels
Doesn't matter
The point is its often unnecessary. If you've to drive over 2000 miles to use your 4x4 for less than a quarter ( being generous probably more like 1/12) of the time you dint really need it.
I'd debate that statement. We all have adventures in our motorhomes.
My motorhome is used 24 hours per day , 7 days a week, 12 months of the year. You don't really need a motorhome either. "Real" need is a red herring. Like saying that anything above the barest physical subsistence isn't a "real" need.
And if I only need a low gear to get up hills that make up 1/12th of the distance, does it then follow that I don't need a low gear?
But do you really need it ?My motorhome is used 24 hours per day , 7 days a week, 12 months of the year.
All gears are used every day.
Your analogy doesn't work.
Assuming that one can establish that crossing the desert is a need.
We ran elderly R4 vans on the farm. With half decent tyres on the front they would go anywhere a land-rover would. Wouldn't tow or carry much, but as it was me, a toolbox & maybe a couple of bags of sheep feed, they did the job just fine. The Moroccans cross the desert in 40 year old 2 wheel drive Renault 4's on ordinary tyres.
More than you need yoursBut do you really need it ?
Fortunately I've not had the desire or the need. I spent 24 hours looking at it.Assuming that one can establish that crossing the desert is a need.
It’s not a “ story “ it’s a “ journey “ which is “ challenging “An adventure van is a type of van owned by content creators, YouTubers and influencers. Since they are not allowed to just go on holiday like the rest of us but must be on an "adventure" which is part of their "story".
Since everything they do is part of their adventure any van they own must be an adventure van.
They are of course always desperate to tell you how much of an adventure they are having in their adventure van
Wouldnt want to be the seventhseeing seven men in less than an hour
Theyre very similar cars how theyre built but I always preferred the look of the Renault 4 to the 2cv ....and having driven a 2cv a few times when I was an apprentice I didn't like how they drove. If the R4 is not your thing what about the 2CV? I was passed by a group of them yesterday heading for Freetown, Sierra Leone!
I think I saw them too Steve, heading towards the Mauritania border great wee fun motorsIf the R4 is not your thing what about the 2CV? I was passed by a group of them yesterday heading for Freetown, Sierra Leone!
Having crossed it once then I definitely needed to cross it again to get home...Assuming that one can establish that crossing the desert is a need.

Totally agree with this, after all who even needs a motorhome, Dave Kunst circumnavigated the planet on foot between 1970 and 1974, Shane Acton circumnavigated the planet in a 18' plywood boat that cost £400 over 8 years, Noraly Schoenmaker has travelled most of the planet on her motorcycles, we all travel as our sense of adventure and budget allow, and long may that continue.this argument again? Seriously, why does everyone care so much when someone wants something they either don’t want or can’t afford. I don’t get why everyone feels the need to get so uptight about this stuff. It’s not good for you.
Go and read John Stewart Mill’s On Liberty. If someone isn’t actually doing anyone else harm, let them have their fun.
I’ll also quote The Captain’s favourite philosopher:
“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” ― Marcus Aurelius

You could just not read it if it offends you so much .Totally agree with this, after all who even needs a motorhome, Dave Kunst circumnavigated the planet on foot between 1970 and 1974, Shane Acton circumnavigated the planet in a 18' plywood boat that cost £400 over 8 years, Noraly Schoenmaker has travelled most of the planet on her motorcycles, we all travel as our sense of adventure and budget allow, and long may that continue.
Apparently not this one thoughI even completely avoid whole sections of the forum
Its in motorhome chat , one of the few forums i viewApparently not this one thoughjoking aside, nothing you've written offends me, I just don't understand why you seem so against 4 x 4 motorhomes, unfortunately for me I don’t have the budget for one but having had to be towed off a pitch more then once, I can certainly see the attraction, even in the UK, and if I could afford one it would give me more confidence to explore out of the way places, I certainly don't begrudge someone who can afford one their purchase.
Hi I’m considering one of these for our Ducato based Dethleffs. How did you get on with the Vat and import duty? I believe it’s not always hassle free depending on the courier. Tia.We've heard this term banded about in social media.
What exactly is an "adventure van"?
We all have adventures in our motorhomes.
How adventurous do you have to be in order to become an adventure traveller?
How adventurous does your van have to be to become an adventure van?
Our Laika has loads of ground clearance, loads of lithium, all season tyres, roof bars, a ladder and a sump guard. Is it an adventure van now? Does it need to have the spare wheel bolted to the back wall to quality?
Nb, If you are adventurous and fancy an adventurous sump guard, we can recommend these chaps-

Isaiah Berlin's Two Concepts of Liberty would seem to be apposite.this argument again? Seriously, why does everyone care so much when someone wants something they either don’t want or can’t afford. I don’t get why everyone feels the need to get so uptight about this stuff. It’s not good for you.
