Hi Everyone just finished lunch after getting back and first job is to tell you all that we bought it. My wife was taken with it immediately and after she gave the interior a good inspection and I gave the bodywork and undercarriage a good look at we bought it without any haggling.
Took it for a test drive. Loved the driving position - commanding is the word.
Speedo is in kilometers so need to do running calculations when driving.
Thanks everyone for your invaluable input especially walburga - the pictures look great and a lot cleaner than the van is now
Picking it up at weekend and looking forward to giving it a good clean and getting the interior as homely as we can. Now spending time discussing where we are going to go on our first trip - probably a short trip to the borders to a CL to get familiar with everything - we are now truly Funsters.

Got a few figures for the Hymer from my journal....Jan-Feb-Mar-Apr 2015 trip through France to Spain and return.

Start Leyland 28/1/15 98378 Km....... return 3/5/15 103419 Km...average mpg.... 24.2 mpg

least during the trip was 19.6 mpg over the massif central....best was 26.1 mpg Zaragoza to Poitiers, that's a lot downhill and flat (ish).

Hi Allen hope you don't mind me picking your brain for a moment but do you remember if it has a timing chain or belt. It must be a rare model on the British roads because I can find practically nothing about it on-line and I have been pretty determined as I like to know all I can about something I have bought. I even went onto Marketplaatz, the Dutch gumtree, and nothing there either although there were plenty B models for sale. Some nice vintage Hymers for sale there as well.

I've never seen another S650...but it's a mk.1 Sprinter engine, 5 cylinder 2.9 TD, with timing chain...the best merc engine produced...often quoted as 'capable of intergalactic mileage'.
I think a company called 'Russek' (or similar) do a workshop manual for the running gear.
I'd have a look on mobil.de, some older hymers on there.
ps I've seen a few E650's...fiat based...same layout though, there's one near me that's been up somebody's drive for about 4 years just getting more mouldy everytime I see it...shame.

Wonder why they're so rare? There's an old Mercedes Hymer parked in the road round the corner from me and has been sitting there unmoved for over a year when the owner must have decided to take it out for a constitutional on Monday. I've had several vehicles with the speedo in km. The first one a had a "cheat sheet" pinned on the dash but after an hour it was just natural to convert.

If you are in The Borders remember there is a long drive at Puddleduck Towers Pond should you wish to park up for free for a night or two.

Easiest way is use a Satnav and take your speed of that or get a gps HUD speedo.

A VFR - fantastic bikes. We toured Europe on a VFR 750F. Took 2 of us with full luggage and tent from Holland through Germany and into Poland - never missed a beat. Before that had an Africa Twin but that got stolen from outside my house, finished my biking days with a Yamaha FJ1200 which took us from Edinburgh to Portugal, again without missing a beat. Was a lot younger then and could never do it again but new adventures await with the Hymer once this damned Covid starts to disappear.
Thought about towing a Gold Wing with the Hymer but I'm just trying to relive past glories and its not going to happen

For a short time I have a boyfriend with a motorbike - the bike more of an attraction than the boy to be honest. A Goldwing looks like it is riding in an armchair - I doubt I would be able to get aboard these days though.

I doubt if my wife could get aboard a bike, even a Goldwing, anymore. Its strange how you change as you get older. When I had my sports touring bikes I would look down my nose at anyone on such a fogeyish bike as a Goldwing - now I would love to get one.

Dundonian, then Glaswegian and now an Edinburger - LOL ! True Scot but doesn't like haggling - is there such a thing? I must be that rare thing because I hate haggling unless the price is so obviously inflated. We both thought it was a fair price also with loads of extras and we had the money in the budget so we just went for it. Saying that, when we used to holiday in Turkey we would travel all over by bus and when we got to a hotel my wife would immediately haggle the price down usually by half so we do have it in us when needed but now that we are comfortable the instinct must be dormant
Hawick sounds good - something new for us to do at New Year which to be honest has changed since i was young when we would go into town, Dundee to the City Square. and Edinburgh to the Tron with a bottle and then go to a party. Now its all commercialised and they have ripped the tradition and custom out of the heart of hogmanay. Nobody first foots anymore for example.

Our S740 is on a Mercedes 616 chassis and has a double floor throughout, I don't know where you got the idea that only Fiat chassis have double floors, ie, winterised. But im afraid to say, you're wrong.

Our S650 on a Mercedes 416 chassis also has double floor throughout. I thought pretty much all Hymer A class of that vintage had similar structures.

I agree I would be surprised if you could carry a Motorbike legally on a 3500kgs. and carry your necessarys, it's either going to be overweight on the rear axle or and both vehicle and rear axle are going to be over which would add up to 2 charges if both over weights applied. I hope the Op. is careful , O and too much weight on the rear may make the vehicle wander

Hi Tony its a double axle 4.5 tonne so should be ok. BTY that sounds like an ice skating move!
