@laneside ... not sure about "running" the gauntlet ... UK traffic jams equals crawling very slowly towards a camera that surely will not flash ... oh how I hate the usually free flowing roads of France ... damn

View attachment 295227 Well at least we have a choice of running the gauntlet of the speed cameras over here.
Not sure people can complain about French speed cameras as the UK is full of them and don’t mention average speed cameras , what are they all about ! As well as traffic jams you are lucky if you get anywhere the same day !!

We've been travelling (occasionally) the 650 kms to Calais, to make the crossing to the UK for the last 18 years and I can still clearly remember the last time we got held up on the way, October 2004, and the only other occasion which was May 2003. Similarly I can remember the last time I didn't get held up when returning to Dover, August 2015. I had hours to wait on Dover docks for our ferry, just because the roads were clear for once on the 250 mile journey. ;)

@moulin 87 - from what I have seen of the negotiations the U.K. needs no assistance in appearing to be a laughing stock.

@busby - first time speeding or first time caught? I think we should be told

Loved France until this morning. Just received speeding fine for last Oct travelling down the A10..My own fault and very unusual for me to be exceeding 50 mph..May get cruise control fitted..Off over again in a couple of weeks so it has not put me off.First time in 20 years.BUSBY:cry::cry:

Was it the N10 not the A10 and what speed did they record you at? I know above 3.5T the speed limit is 80 kmph even on the dual carriageway but the hordes of wagons trundle along at 90 kmph, or the speed of the slowest at the front. They do seem to adhere to the no overtaking rule.

@moulin 87 - from what I have seen of the negotiations the U.K. needs no assistance in appearing to be a laughing stock.

It doesn't bear thinking too much about what is going on? and who is the puppet/(muppet) and who are the puppeteers... Oh! to be a fly on the wall at some of these meetings and the meetings after Theresa has been escorted out.

400, in a country double the size of UK?! How dreadful! Big Brother .... Not. Teeny weeny brother.

If they are on tall poles, at least they will be easier to spot than the ones hidden at the end of a run of fencing or a line of trees.

As for the comment ''ever changing speed limits" - pathetic. How many times have the speed limits changed in France? Every fortnight? Three times a year?

Best thing, tho' is, as here, there and everywhere - don't speed.

I got a FPN, complete with photos, for making an illegal left turn in the jurisdiction of Kingston upon Thames. The vehicle in the photos was a silver Vauxhall Astra. My white Vauxhall Movano 3.5 tonne van was 1200 miles away in a garage in Valencia at the time.....

The UK system is far more onerous, numerous and all pervasive than anything on the continent.

There is a funny thing, I just got a speeding ticket from France the other day from Oct last year on the N154 Direction; Chartres vers Dreux. If my memory serves ma well, (love that song, "Wheels on fire, rollin down that road" ), is not to far north of N10 territory. Could it be that they were hitting the brits in that area/route. I am thinking that it could be the same batch from the same Dept sent out at the same time. Anyone else got one??

To add to my previous post, maybe us lot with the HGV listed vans should watch out more as the new cams in France can tell the difference between -3.5ton and HGV!. different speed limit.
I don't think I will be over there this year anyway until they sort out the mess with the pet passport and Bxxxxt.

Don't totally disagree with what you say, but just to clarify, the article indicates 1,600 new cameras by next year (not just 400).

Well worth highlighting this (in the UK spirit that these cameras are safety cameras and not speed cameras) as the Rouen-Evreux-Dreux-Chartres route is a favourite for those heading to both the Basque country and Catalonia.

Are you seriously suggesting the siting of the speed cameras in this area is designed to catch 'Brits' in particular....

I doubt if in the summer periods even 1% are Brits and in the off season it would be just a few a day who use those routes. Secondly those cameras have been there YEARS, long before these nasty French had the ability to trace and fine those 'Brits' who have actually broken the speed limit and who could well have been driving without due care and attention because they are visible and there are huge warning signs.

No. I just stated it would be nice to know where the camera is as in the UK cameras are only placed where there have been accidents and the aim is to reduce accidents. Highlighting areas where there have been accidents helps stop accidents hence why so many companies provide that information. Sharing driver information is core to this site. Being a 'Frog' or British doesn't come into it.

We all have our own opinions on how the Spanish/French police feel about brit tourists, lets face it there is a lot of bad feeling in this country at the moment with regard anything or anyone Euro, but I am not one of them.I like being part of Europe and my previous comment about Brits being targeted by French police was meant to be taken light heartedly, I meant no offence to anyone in France, in fact I wish I could speak more French than I do Because I find that the French campingcaristes would mostly love to talk to most of us.

A couple of years ago Britain had around 2800 speed cameras and about 1400 of them were active.
I know at least one is active in Leicestershire, I’m going on a speed awareness course on Wednesday!
The amount of cameras being installed in France, a country twice the size of Britain , still makes France a better bet to escape a speeding fine .............and you don’t get points.
Just saying, lol.

I've no idea what the official French regs are for siting cameras.. Near me there are a few specifically there to enforce reduced speed through dangerous bends where I have seen HGVs on their side having gone through too fast. The majority though are in small villages, hamlets and perhaps the entrance to larger towns on Route Nationals to control speed in built up areas. Further afield you'll find them on all roads, straight as a dye, there just to control excessive speed. In all cases, a few '000,000€ per camera won't go amiss.

In France if you are under 20 kmph above the limit it is only 1 point and just for 6 months. 90€ fine.

Now what happens if I speed in my French regd. car in the UK, I heard they can't be bothered to do the paperwork to chase me in France. If so when I'm next over I might cruise through the numerous average speed zones at 70 with impunity, just to test the 'Entente Cordiale' to the limit:LOL::LOL:

Quick check there appears to be a map here - something to while an hour away with - for safety reasons :)

This may be of use to one and all, a map of all the French fixed cameras updated every 2 months

French campingcartistes are really a friendly bunch even they do look a little serious ! They are a little afraid if they don’t speak English but approach them and they will try to communicate lol I have been a member of a French camping-car club for 15 years and the only English speaking member but from day one when my French was v basic they were very welcoming . I am sure another funster can confirm this too .@moulin87

I've no idea whether they still do it but a few years ago the police used to publish where they would be with their mobile units for the next week. You would find the details on their local website or in the local papers.

I couldn't be bothered to look, people still flash you if they are ahead. ( Unless you're a Brit. of course then, they'll just let you pass at 86kmph(y)(y))

OH I didn't think of that, more information gathering?
When I had to pay my speeding fine they asked whether I wanted to give my email for an official receipt. Quick screen dump and no emails exchanged for me.

Yes. That's true. Some to the extent that France is off-limits or just somewhere to transit on the way to somewhere else. We have examples in this thread. Sad people.

Thanks for that..I am NOT sad people, I am people who have been ripped off to the tune of more than few €s more than once by French people.
I have ( in a hotel in Normandy ) been deeply insulted by the woman who ran the place ( so much so that without prompting her husband came to find my son and I and apologised ), been the butt end of ros buef jokes by a camp site manager talking over my shoulder to a bunch of cronies who were drinking at the bar in reception ( I know very little french but I know enough ), plus almost countless other incidents.
Hence by dislike of staying longer than I have to in France
In the past 12 years we have visited 23 countries.. France is the only one this sort of thing has happened to us in

Yes, I know that the UK can be just as bad if not worse but two wrongs have never made a right

Final thing.. You are a fairly new member ( 18 months but barely 160 posts ) so proly are unaware..
On this forum we do not tell folk to 'get a life', correct wrong spelling, correct wrong grammar or call anyone sad for having an opinion
Those things are considered pretty bad form.. but as I said, you are fairly new and if you did not know about the 'rules' fair enough :)
