Hi all, I hope you are enjoying the Bank holiday weekend.
Quick question...I have a 6kg red gas bottle but am unsure how much is left in it..is there any way to work it out or weigh it?

I believe it is because where there is a volume of gas the heat transfer from the boiling water is different to the empty space above it.
It is very obvious to see when tested like that.

Best just to weigh it and subtract the bottle weight. 1kg equates to approx 2 litres.

The most accurate way is to pick it up and slosh it around a bit. It's more accurate then any gauge tbh..
Ensuring it's turned off.
I once made that mistake with a 13kg bottle in a superser heater in the house lounge.
Held on its side while I gave It a vigorous shake It spit out a load of liquid gas which set fire to the carpet.
It doesn't burn for long but it's frightening

You can do it by weight but you need to know the empty weight and full weight.
Then you know the weight of gas as a start point.
If there's 10kg of liquid gas when full then 5kg is 50% Etc

My mopeka kept giving false/poor readings due to the sensor sliding around on the bottom of the cylinder so i replaced the battery in it and overtaped it with gaffer tape. Since then no odd readings.
Good tech that works,, now!

Never stop learning 😊
I have a chart for my little 907 cylinder which claims weight / percentage of gas remaining ratio. Maybe a firtle around Google would give you similar for your bottle?

As Geoff says above, just use hot water. Or if you have scales to hand weigh and substract.

No need for fancy apps or gauges which all seem to be fairly inaccurate.

I bought one of these simple hand scales from Amazon. Cheap, easy to use, handy for weighing anything really. Tried it with a new Calor Propane 6kg bottle that I bought this week, just to check. The tare weight of the bottle was 8.2kg. On the scale it showed 14.2kg so I have the correct 6kg of propane. It has a tare function too but as I am able to do basic maths I didn't bother with that :)

Ever since lighting was by Calor gas.
I weigh mine on bathroom scales and deduct the Tare weight that is stamped on the aluminium collar noting that it's given in Imperial units.
I have had two new 6kg cylinders from the main Calor distributor that were 17% and 15% underweight from the start. I detailed the full story of my follow up with Calor in an earlier thread here........
