It's a completely nonsensical basis for calculating V.E.D.

Your V.E.D. could & should be £140 p.a. or even less for Euro 6 @old-mo

I was a bit miffed too until I read you can't drive as fast in the heavier class. Now I think the extra money is well spent, especially with the speed cameras in France.

Shush! At 3700Kg I’m very happy with the current arrangements  so I don’t want the authorities being reminded of the discrepancy.

You'd think common sense would dictate a charge levied based on the probable wear and tear to the highways:(

I think it was originally predicated on the amount of usage a PHGV would get , eg if you had renovated an old 8 wheel Foden you would not be using it for shopping or running kids to school etc .
RVs have never been specifically catered for as they have been shoehorned into other legislation as cheaper than enacting special legislation , and as time has passed its got more and more convoluted ..

The system is based on ancient runes written by druids on scripts discovered when the builders were digging the foundations for the new DVLA building in Swansea. It as considered to be a sign from a pagan god and, fearful of reprisal for failing to heed his teachings was incorporated into the road tax rules. Or that's what I have been told anyway.
