Hello everyone,

My family and friends want to hire my motor caravan it can accommodate 4 adults what is the average cost per night?

Welcome to the forum
Where are you based and what do you have..?

I think that's the best way of losing friends and alienating the family.
If you do ,Make sure your insurance covers and who pays for any damage ,inside or out. Occasional drivers that hire your van are not experienced at driving/ manoeuvring a large vehicle.

In my opinion there isn't enough money to cover the risk.
Even professional hire companies will take a massive deposit, maybe £1000, as a deposit against damage, not just external but interior damage as well.

A couple we know did it and ended up selling a wrecked van.

Your insurance is unlikely to cover you for hiring it out so make sure you call them and check.

A £20000 deposit and rental of £5000 per week would go some way to covering the costs you may incur.

You can’t put a price on falling out with your rellies.

I've let family borrow my van before. But it was up to them to sort out the insurance (there are plenty of places that'll do short-term cover). And I didn't charge because then there's no argument about it not coming back in the exact same condition. Whereas if they'd paid me, maybe they'd expect some 'fair use'.

Shouldnt the phrase be
"I want to hire out my van to my friends and family"

Tell em the cost = their lives when it goes wrong.

Not for me, ever

You could go on Swift Go website they have loads of varying styles of moho so find the closest to yours.
Very expensive imo though.

Hi and welcome.

Simple answer is, just don't do it.

Lot so far hire companies out there to take the brunt of inexperienced motorhomers, leaving your van to be used and enjoyed by yourselves only.

Welcome from Ciren! (y)

……..think VERY carefully about hiring your ‘van out - then don’t do it!!!:(

Typical rate would be about £1200/week in August with a £1000 deposit to cover damages. This is for a big fleet operation where things like insurance are jam spread so it would be quite a bit dearer to insure individually. European cover would also be extra.

I spent over ten years servicing and maintaining a fleet of ten motorhomes. The state some of them came back in would make you cry. Some were simply abused by the hirers as they just didn’t care, but others came back damaged simply because the hirers were not used to the size of what they were driving. Apart from having to repair them parts especially body parts are not easy to obtain even for current models. Most of our vans were replaced after two or three years as in all fairness if you are going to pay a lot of money for something you don’t want a battered and bent one. Insurance will also be a bit of a grey area, our own van has a mileage limit of 8000 miles although this can be altered if you hire yours out and the hirer arranges their own insurance that may pose a problem. And how can you be sure other policies will cover every eventually. At best don’t do it at worst possibly put it on a site as a static. It will be the best way to fall out with friends and family. Back in 2001 we lent ours to our son, the first couple of times it came back as it left, then it would have no fuel, empty tank full loo, then dad, this van uses a lot of fuel to find they had driven somewhere long distance that I would struggle to cover the same journey in that time in my car. You only have to research and find a lot of. Firms that used to hire them no longer do so.
