Halfords £10 MOT offer

98% failure rate to be sure.
They will do everything in their power to find faults just to get repair work.
They know anyone going there don't have a clue.
That was my experience years ago. The car was failed. I didn't accept this and took it elsewhere and it passed and did again thereafter. I did gave the supposed failed item checked and there was no problem with it.

As the saying goes

No such thing as a free lunch :)

My son had one of the free mot offers from last year off halfords 2010 peugeot i said it was not the best place for an mot anyway halfords did mot - failed on 1 tyre which then got replaced - so he got a nice result - but i think like others halfords for mot can be costly

I used them, got a long list of advisories, rusty brake cable, rusty exhaust, broken rear springs, quoted nearly £800 to repair, so I took van to VW van centre.
They replaced broken springs at over £200 LESS than Halfords quote, and told me the rest of the advisories were nothing to worry about.
The thing that annoyed me most was a rear brake light bulb had blow, I told them this as they were also servicing the van and asked them to replace the bulb, but they didn't do it and failed on that too. The quote to replace the bulb was £25 labour plus £3 for the bulb, but Halfords next door (the shop) do the bulb for £5 plus bulb. I replaced the bulb myself.

They are a bunch of thieving gits !

Think the major issue is with what gets recorded on mot which also gets recorded on the mot database and if selling a vehicle gives a worse picture than actually is of the vehicle - and you cant just whip it round the corner to another garage for a more sensible mot like you could before everything got recorded

Sweeping statement alert?? :)
Oh I don't know..... Read the other replies.

They don't make these offers out of the goodness of their heart.

They can't fail something for the sake of failing it but they WILL fail something other testers will give 'benefit of doubt' on and pass.

I'm not so sure about the criticism T.B.H.

@BusyBuilder
Advisories are just that- not fails- not compulsory to have the work done. Walk away- which you did
It seems the VW place confirmed that the advisories were there, just "not to worry about them"

@pappajohn
98% fail rate- I've asked you a million times not to exaggerate
and ALL Halfords customers are clueless??? (none taken)

I suppose the question is, do users consider the MOT test as something to get through as cheap as possible, and if the tester misses/turns a blind eye that's ok???
Surely it's about choice, if you don't wanna go there fine
I'm sure OP thought he was being helpful

I prison officer I have known for years took his wifes Skoda for its first MOT to them...
Failed on rear brake drums.
He foned them and said do what is needed.
After he put the fone down he thought about it..
Rang wife and said HE would pick the car up.
Went to collect, said nowt and paid the bill.
THEN called the manager over..

Can you point out the read brake drums I have just paid for and are itemised on this bill please

The car had rear disks which had not been touched.....

My 2 sons have an MOT centre. There is a price for trade customers but Joe Public is charged the going rate. If it passes it passes, if it fails it fails, even their own vehicles!
If bulb or wiper knackered, new ones are fitted often for free. Headlamp beam is adjusted where required.
The remit is can I pass it? not can I fail it!
Remember, a test takes around 45 minutes, do you think Halfords are charging their time at £12.50 an hour?

I agree, but it's the doubt that they place in the customers mind that may worry them, your brake cable is rusty (well it is 9 years old) but it may snap and you'll have no brakes. Things like this is immoral in my mind, if it was my wife she'd say do the work and pay up.

It's the doubt that they place in someones mind though, your brake cable is 9 years old and rusty, it may snap leaving you with no brakes. If this was my wife she'd say do the work, in my mind this is immoral.

When another garage says it's okay nothing to worry about, what does that say about Halfords MOT testing regime ??

It says more about the people who want to pay £10 for something that costs £55 (car) and their “surprise” that All may not be what it seems
