Came across this on German form
It was stated driver was not seriously hurt
I've seen caravans like this before but would have thought a motor home would be more rigid

Hymer A Class - looks like it was made from balsa wood. Wonder what the build quality will be like when 'Thor' Industries have full control of the Hymer Group purse strings?

It certainly did crumple Martin. Looks like the crumple zone was front to back or just lets say the whole bloody van.

Do you think ours will fare a bit better Ken?

I bloody hope so.

They are virtually all made like caravans aren't they? Except my PVC of course. :)

Where have they taken it. That rear offside window looks undamaged and mine has a small crack in it :).

They're made from a mixture of polyurethane foam, GRP and aluminium with furniture made from lightweight plywood (little boxes made of ticky tacky springs to mind). This is exactly what I'd expect to see with any coach-built or a class motorhome involved in a major collision. Would be interested to see what happened in the accident.

More or less same factories, same construction. No strength at all. Lightness is everything.

I saw a Hymer S820 2002 model(although it was the 616 6 tonne model) that had been involved in a massive front end crash, works panel van that crashed into it was a crumpled mess, the rest of the van was like new so I am not sure whether the older models would fare better or not.

DBK Putting a PVC on its side wouldn't be a great experience ether
Lots of potential for the contents to get airborne
Hopefully a bit more protection though
Not something I want to experience

Look's like it was new (ish) too. I suspect most if not all motor-homes would be total destroyed in a similar accident.

I saw this one for sale after this altercation with the tree, the tree doesn't look to have come off very well either.

I worked on the heavy rescue vehicle when in the Fire Service in Glasgow .Which dealt with lots of road traffic accidents as well as many other types all over Scotland and a tree like the one in the picture is one of the hardest thinks to hit as there is very little give at the base of the trunk.
Tree always wins.!!!

Cheers Cris:cheers:.

Very dramatic, I'm surprised there isn't a requirement for some form of roll bar or similar to be incorporated during construction.

Thats a terrible thing to happen, as others have said, need more info on what actually occurred, could have been a high speed tyre blow out, but if so front or rear?.
I sometimes ask myself unlike a car, how little damage would have to be done to warrant a MH being deemed as a write off, even on a fairly new one i.e rear corner shunt scenario, involving damage to rear bumper and panel, plus rear of one side panel? I bet that would be enough these days for an insurance right off, with parts and labour.
Scary thought that one, be careful everyone.

I,m sure some of them were built around a cage, Esterel A class I think?
