Just browsing through the motorhome ads on eBay - as I often do when I’m bored - and wondered what any of you make of this one:

The bit I’m interested in is the insurance loss. Does it sound likely? Surely the previous owner could have continued on their ‘massive European tour’ with just a replacement solar panel (plus satellite dish and TVs if they were deemed of great importance). It doesn’t sound as if any great damage was done to the van if keys were used to get in!

So, what do you think? o_O

I don’t know about the insurance bit, I suppose there may have been sufficient damage to the roof to prevent carrying on.
However, looking at the ebay ad I had a sense of deja vue about seeing his place before and reading that he has a Motorhome business run from home, somewhere on here recently.
I cannot bring to mind the subject.

I don’t know, the wording is a bit strange.

“A massive European tour...”......

It’s 4 years old and with only 16,000 miles on the clock. Our PVC is just over one year old and after a couple of trips to Europe has 13,000 miles on.

It may be a great buy but if, on contacting the seller they are looking for a “deposit to secure it” I would be wary. Depending on how far away from your home it is it may be worth contacting the seller and asking to view it at their property and see what they say. Check it’s not a “Buy cheap and shift them” home dealer.

If genuine it shouldn’t be a problem. If it is, “in for service” or it is suggested you view at a Motorway Services or similar walk away and keep the money.

So it’s subject to an insurance loss which sounds like a right off? So it would have a category A B C etc.

If so I’m pretty sure you have to state the category of a vehicle at the point of sale..?

@Riverbankannie i know what you mean and I think it’s the deffleffts owner with the VW business your referring to who has an advert on the classified on this forum...

Looks like a lovely motorhome, I love the dash.
Sounds an odd story though ref the insurance claim, I'd want to know more.

I’m not seriously thinking of buying it - I just have a bad/sad habit of trawling through eBay ads. :) But yours is good advice for anyone considering this van. (y)

''Alko central heating
uprated engine (standard is 146hp), this was 177hp with the auto gearbox''

First line spelling mistake I hope, second one plainly wrong.

''I bought the motorhome from the Insurance company in this condition. Basically they had decided to fly the couple home as the cost of providing a replacement vehicle in the middle of summer to continue a massive European tour would have been huge. They paid the customer the insurance value, allowing them to dispose of the vehicle at their leisure, mitigating their costs as the difference in value rather than unknown repairs and many weeks of hiring an A class motorhome (around £5000 per week). ''

I am not sure I believe a word of the above either.

If you read all the blurb it clearly explains that the intention was a massive European tour but they only got as far as Portugal before they had the insurance claim ... the current seller has had it for 2 years and done 6,000 miles.

It shows as insured and has Tax and MOT until June.
If I was interested I would like to speak to the previous owner.

To me there’s too much detail in the insurance explanation. If this person bought it from the insurance company why would they be given the info that keys were stolen from an office to steal TVs? Surely it’d just be for sale as an insurance loss, sold as seen ? Too much detail = lies.

I am asking £75,000. I want no offers, no timewasters and for this I wont waste your time. This is far less than I paid for the motorhome, before spending many thousands on it.

Now why on earth would the seller want to do that....... SCAM!

As previously said...It is a Write off. So a Cat A B or S N? Which one? Does not state it ? I would look at it as if it it was a Cat N. Only because there seems to be no damage apart from theft to the roof items etc?
Personally though...Advise caution like everyone else has said.
Nice truck though!!

Agree if insuramce write off would be categorised
If you do a full credit check which will cost you this will flag up.
Surprised this is not mentioned in listing.
Not sure seller is telling truth. Loads if unanswered questions.
For a 100k vehicle would have been cost effective to bring it home and repair it.
Had it been 40k van I could understand
It smells fishy
Walk away.

only done 400 ish miles between 2017 mot and 2018 mot. so mileage is likely good.

there is a way of checking if its an insurance loss, but i cant find the website at the moment.

not that i have £75k to spare.

HPI limit of indemnity is only £30,000.
No good if you've paid £70k and its a crock lol

I find it suspicious why the insurance company did not just pay for the replacement components as they usually will take the easiest and cheapest route .

Even if you viewed at a property it might just be on a short time rent when the high value item is on offer .

Anything on a auction site you need extra care .

If I say I’m bored the missus gets the paint brushes out....

It will be registered as a write off therefore worth a lot less ( hence the valuation) it maybe difficult to find someone to insure it & expensive!!!

That ad.. J K Rowling would be proud of that write up !
Was going quite well till the bit about costing a fortune to get the van home...
Course..with no sat dish, solar panel or telly it would be impossible to just drive it home.. and an insurance company is gonna pay out about 90 grand for a £1200 job !
Duly reported to eBay as a scam

If I, or you were on a 'massive European trip', with a very expensive MoHo, it would be full of stuff for the trip. Would you leave it in a car park and hand your keys over? I don't think so!

Engine would be standard Paul, it will be 50c18 chassis so 5t with uprated to 5400kg and the 18 is 176 bhp motor.

All the ebay feedback are purchases, except one. Sometimes they buy lots of small items to build up their ratings.

I recon it probably has had replacement stuff on the roof as he has the receipts probably driven under a bridge that was too low first!!
