I have had a fair experience of dealing with large organisations but this lot take the biscuit.I sent my V5 along with all the relevant documents to have the gross max weight on my van increased. After 5 week's I rang them to be told they hadn't arrived but was asked to give it anouweek just in case.I rang some 10 days later, went through the background of the case only to be untold they had arrived after all,but they didn't know where they were!I have now rang a six further times and on each occasion I was promised a call back within 24 hours. Not once have I been called back.I am now in the position of travelling to France on Thursday and still no sign of my V5.How on earth can they run a department so badly and is there anything I can do to get this sorted?

I don’t think you are going to get that sorted by Thursday did you take a copy of your log book? If so at least you will have a document of sorts.
We have been travelling down through France for the last Seven years and have never had to produce any documents or been stopped.
So I would think your chances of being stopped are pretty slim.?

Perfectly standard for the Welsh home for the bewildered. They can`t get anything right even their own documents. My licence had more miles on it than I did when I wanted to renew my C1.

Never ever send them anything without keeping a good copy. The number of people who have "lost" entitlements due to their incompetence is legion. Motorcycle entitlement is a very regular "loss". and I know of at least 2 who had to do retakes!.

Fortunately I do I have a copy.I have no idea where to go next though. It is literally like talking to a brick wall. How can they be allowed to carry on treating people like this.

I wholeheartedly sympathise...

I had a similar tale; sent off mine for a weight change I rang after 4 weeks to be told i had not sent in the then existing tax disc. i explained it was stapled to the main document... AH yes we have it ! she said......
you must write and tell us it was included and stapled to main document!!

2 weeks later i called again to be told now a different piece of paperwork which was also stapled together was missing...
AH yes we have it ! ..... please write to inform us.

2 weeks later I called again and it was pending!!! i guess they were looking for yet another excuse not to have processed it.....

after taking several long deep breaths and curtailing my natural instinct to rip a head off I politely but firmly asked to speak to the department management.
who was regrettably unavailable but would call me in the next 48 hours.

48 hours later the V5 was on the door mat.

I have no idea how to get them to sort this out for you by Thursday;
any chance you may have made a copy of the original V5 at some time and its lurking at home? not that it would be much use. but you could take that with any postal signed for info you have. at least then you have some documentation.

sorry not much help.

They'll probably privitise it next then you'll see how bad it can get.

But why are they so useless?
Is it because they are welsh?

There does appear to me no middle ground, it is either done right and super quick or not

We have had plate transfers sorted in 48 hours and others took weeks

To OP as already said we cover loads of French miles and never been stopped or asked for documents, if you have a new weight plate fitted I am sure that is all that would matter and I doubt that will be looked at either

Relax, let it go and clear off to France or wherever with the copy of the old V5 all will be fine (y) , it will be there on the mat when you return

And the next post will be:-

"I was stopped at the ferry terminal and asked for my documents. I tried to explain why I didn't have the V5.....................................
............................................... the food isn't too bad in French prisons.............."

No, but maybe it's because you are not!
Ah yes, but how much dost thou know of my heritage?
When Wales are winning at rugby,my two maternal grandparents who were born in Pontypridd, make me a proud Welshman!
When I watch the Welsh Parliament (what a bunch of whiners!) I feel English.:roflmto::roflmto::drinks:

Dim hyd nawr.

The proper Cymry would consider your distant relatives were from that great English county, Welshshire!

You actually watch the TV coverage fron The Senedd. Nobody in Wales does!

PS 'Roedd my nhafod yn fy moch tra ysgrifennu'r uchod!

Ah yes, well, give me a couple of minutes/days/weeks and I may have a retort.
You’ve got me there...touché! Bloody hell, what have the French got to do with it!

To be fair, I've never experienced anything but excellent service.
In fact, a few years ago, my boss whinged because my licence hadn't come back when it should have and he said I should have sent it earlier . I telephoned them and they confirmed I'd sent it exactly how they'd requested and there was an unfortunate delay but sent a letter immediately by email that covered my delayed licence. He wasn't happy but it compiled with the law. Nothing he could do or say

We had exactly the same experience when upgrading our weight. Sent it signed for guaranteed next day delivery. After 5 weeks they said they'd never received it, even though there was a signature that it had been signed for when I tracked it. Oh no, they said, we dont sign for it the post office do. We had to go through the whole procedure again!

I had similar experiences to others when trying to uprate our motorhome weight, but they never lost anything. .
first they sent the V5 back with the wrong ( original ) weight, then a letter telling me they were sending me another V5 that also had the wrong weight on it ( the V5 turned up 3 days later with the wrong weight) then a week later, the correct V5 with correct weight.
luckily, this was all before they closed the local DVLA offices so I had my tax refund and new tax disc and a temporary V5 with the new details written in given to me before I left the office.

I'm SO glad that when I upgraded my van there was a local DVLA office where I sat in front of the guy whilst he did it all, there and then! Progress!!!

Even the local offices had their share of brain dead pencil pushers.
Years ago a funster tried uprating at his local office to be told not possible, once registered its registered at that weight for life.
I told him to go back and make sure he saw someone else.
Walked out with a new PHGV confirmation letter and tax disc.

Here’s a question.
Over 5000 people work at DVLA and it has been open for over 40 years

During those 200,000+ “man” years ,How many have lost their jobs due to incompetency?

I telephoned them yesterday to find out when my V5C would be returned as I had to send it back because of incorrect weight after upgrade. It’s three weeks since they signed for it. They said that it was not showing in the system. I told them that I am going away on Saturday so they offered to email a temporary registration certificate. It has arrived, it is an ‘Export’ certificate, doesn’t show any weights, but at least it’s something to show if needed.

Casper46

Didn’t know you get something like that. We might be going away so are putting off our weight upgrade possibly as worried as to not having a logbook to go with.
