We are booked on the 07.40 ferry from Dover to Calais next Sunday morning, where is the best place close to Dover to spend Saturday night and how early should I get to the port in the morning? Thank you

When we use the tunnel we over night at the Caravan & motor home site (Blackhorse farm) 10 minutes from tunnel. They have what they call "ferry pitches".
Very good pub just up the road.

It is , as a matter of fact, the shitiest pub ever. We had meal there 3 years ago and it was a disaster.

Waitress: we have an extensive range of curries

Customer: can we hear the list?

Waitress: Too many for me to go through but I will get my colleague to see you.

20 minute wait .......

Customer: WTF is going on?

Waitress : Sorry we are not now doing the curry

Customer : which curry aren't you doing?

Waitress : any of them

Customer : what are you doing?

waitress : sausages and chips

Don't go if you are hungry Oh Please!

Well that's like how long is a piece of string. Who knows till you get there. However, there are quite a lot of decent lay byes near Dover that are used by trucks mainly in the week. Police recommended them to us because Canterbury was closed. Certainly safe enough.

Plenty of people from the site using it.
They even have a menu for dogs.
Good reviews on trip advisor.

Marine parade is quite long, about 3/4 mile so you shouldn't have a problem turning up late to park especially as there will be very few cars there at that time of night. Arrive at the port no later than 30 minutes before sailing time.

We have used the Black Horse site several times and when we were expecting to arrive late they rang us, as we travelled down, to give us the barrier code, so we could access our ferry pitch

To be fair they may have got their act together now. I have been about 5 times in the last 5 years and it has ranged from ok to what I described above.
I think that particular night was a one off where they were having a crisis. A family of four came to sit at the table next to us just before we left. The conversation went like this.

Waitress - Good evening. Before you order I have to tell you what we haven't got ( proceeds to reel off loads of things)

Dad - then what have you got?

Waitress - Sausages.

We were in stitches and so were the other family once the waitress had left.

Last year we used a pub about 10 mins drive away. We were too late to get a meal due to motorway bridge accident but they welcome motorhomes and have plenty of space.

Which road are you coming down in to Dover?
If you come down the A20 it's dead easy
cross two roundabouts and then turn right onto Union St
cross over the lock gate and then turn left
Park on the right hand side near the restaurant and water sports centre
Take a look on street view on google earth

Because of road works in Dover at the moment you have to drive straight on in the morning about 400 yards turn left just befor the big block of flats and after 100 yards turn left back onto the dual carriageway A20 heading away from the docks back to the roundabout go around it and back down the road to the Eastern docks.

Should take about 10 mins from where you were parked.
Sounds complicated but it isn't.

Have to say we have used Dover Calais or Dunkirk a few times now, we have always opted for the middle of the night crossings (cheapest) but, we have always got there early (allow for delays on motorways etc) and we have gone straight up to the terminals gone into the office and up to now they have put us on the next crossing foc! ended up gaining an extra day in France too. Obviously if its a busy time then that wont happen, but they will allow you to wait up by the terminal. Once your over in Calais Cite De Europe is very close to the terminal and we have never had a problem staying there over night. Whats more there is a great shopping complex there with a massive Carrefour supermarket. Enjoy oh and ours was a Coachman Mirada RV
