65p a gallon, that’s the difference between the dearest (SHELL) station 2 miles from me and the cheapest (ASDA) also 2 miles from me

That SPINNING NOISE you might be able to hear is My old man spinning in his grave, who owned some filling stations in early 70’s when there was 5p total profit in a gallon of petrol

I remember when it was a £1 a gallon in the UK & £2 in France now we fill our tanks in France before coming back to the UK..

AND, most days you see the Shell Tanker filling at the same place as the Asda Tanker. The probable only difference will be a Few "additives" (maybe).

I used to work on a forecourt in1965, regular, 2 star was 4s 6d,per gallon, super 4 star was 4s 9d and supreme 5star was 4s 11.5d.
Used to get tips as well, a chap with a big jag used to come in and have 4 gallons each side, keep the change son, wow 4d. I earned 2s6d per hour. Had the tigers tail and the bullet stickers and green shield stamps galore. We were obliged to check oils and tyres as part of the service.

same as me Jimbo, I worked on the pumps in the evening after my day as an apprentice mechanic, I well remember one ‘customer’ who used to come in with his 100 e Ford popular, he asked each time for 1/2 gallon of regular and 1/2 gallon of super, oil water tyres to be checked although he never bought any oil from us, the level was always correct the next time he came in!! I used to hate serving that ‘customer’.??

Indeed, the first auto petrol station opened near us. When the kiosk was closed at night, you put in a pound note and it gave you four gallons. The only time I used it, it ate my pound note so I wrote to complain and they sent me a postal order. :gum:

At least in the 70’s they sold it by the gallon and for under a £1 / gallon ?
5 gallons for 1 pound back in 1962,,3s and 11p a gallon..Could only afford to buy 2 gallon max back then.Think MOT came in about then. BUSBY,,

Frightening when you can remember it being 5 Bob a gallon :Eeek:
I remember my dad getting four gallons of petrol and 20 capstan full strength and change out of a quid ??

My Mum (RIP) raised my pocket money when petrol went from 4'6 to 4'9 so that I could continue to fill up the tank of my Triumph Tiger Cub!

She insisted that I didn't get a job until I left education because I'd be working for the rest of my life: how true.
