After a recent attack on our van, where it took the nice blokes less than a couple of minutes to overcome the factory fitted door lock, ignoring the Growler Stickers and Blue Neon Lights, the alarm activated when they opened the door so they legged it, we decided to upgrade our door security.

We’ve had Deadlocks fitted to both cab doors, sliding door and rear barn doors. £540 fitted at our home.

Now try getting in the doors! I know…..plastic windows. All got extra security, but the Deadlocks are a stand-alone manual system that can only be opened from outside. We thought it may end up looking like a security van, but we’re very pleased with the result. (y)

Thanx

Fitted ours here:

They were 200x cheaper but aren't anything like as secure (y)

First of all- yes if they are determined to get in your van, no amount of security will stop them.

We have several layers of (expensive) security, but we still decided to go for deadlocks.

We often park up in remote car parks to go for a ramble. Anyone seeing us leave the van know that they have time to break in. Deadlocks are a visible deterrent and quite challenging to overcome without tools and cutting door skins etc.

Further, when the van is unattended abroad, it’s not beyond the imagination of a casual observer that it will probably contain some cash and passports etc. so again worth it just to deter someone from trying to break in.

It’s one thing for an alarm to scare them off when entering, it’s the £1k’s of damage caused doing so that’s always a PITA.
If deadlocks provide even just a small amount of deterrent then I’m happy.

Looks like a tidy job.
Obviously they have to drill holes in the bodywork.
What prevents the holes from rusting?

From the website. (y) He said to leave it for a day or so, then wash down the areas as there will be little metal fillings from the cutting / grinding. He also leaves a maintenance leaflet for the locks.

Great tip about gently washing down the areas that had been drilled.

He had obviously tried to clean away the bulk of any mess, so this morning, using a watering can, I gently poured water around the areas that had been drilled. It was surprising how many metal fragments ran down onto the ground.

Next time I clean them van I’ll be sure to take it very gently in those areas, in case I’ve missed some. (y)

Yale M69 are the best deadlocks for cab doors !!

It would be a waste of money for us, we never have anything in the van worth £540 -- ever.
Plus they it don't stop them breaking a window.

Its also worth taking the door cards off the cab doors and hoovering out any swarf/metal filings that have dropped down inside...not that I have done it myself, but I did see a video on You Tube of a security lock install company down south, and he made a real fuss to make sure there were no fillings inside the Cab , side whoosh bang, and rear doors on a PVC van.

Heosafe locks are much cheaper and easy DIY but not visible from outside.
https://www.outdoorbits.com/heosafe-door-locks-fiat-ducato-2007-onwards-key-lockable-p-4960.html

I fitted the Heosafe locks as they enable us to deadlock the cab and hab doors from inside when sleeping in the van, but found it a pain in the bum to lock them and then have to exit via the hab door, so I fitted the additional external deadlocks and as we each have a key it's easy to lock the cab doors when we park up and leave the van, plus they have the visual deterrent. To many locks? maybe a by-product of being an intruder alarm, access control and CCTV engineer for ten years in my past.

Did ours a few years ago.

Dreadlocks…..my hairs too short for them……oops, sorry read the post title wrongly!!!
Our Hymer had a deadlock on the cab & hab doors when we got it!

But our van is worth far more than £540. ;)

Windows, extra locks on them but can be broken of course. However, if they want to steal the van all doors are locked from the outside, therefore entry / exit not going to be straightforward.🤷‍♂️

You can buy false stick on key locks on eBay…..about £20 I think. (y)

All sounds good to me……

  • ns to meet the demanding requirements of commercial vehicle security
  • The lock case has a compact footprint permitting several fitting positions
  • 60% less metal is removed from the structural part of the door during installation compared to other lock cases, resulting in the most effective security
  • Lock kits are vehicle specific and contain all the required fixings, fittings and instructions to enable a technician to perform a professional installation
  • Kits available in T-Series and S-Series key systems
  • L4V cylinders, housings, and plugs are plated in highly durable satin nickel to maintain a long-lasting appearance and consistent performance
  • L4V black nylon external barrel trims supplied as standard to maintain the aesthetic appearance of the vehicle
  • Satin nickel-plated brass barrel trims, oversized black barrel trims, and angled black barrel trims are also available
  • We supply each kit with 3 keys (however kits pinned up to specific key numbers are only supplied with one key as standard. Call us to arrange additional keys)
  • Suitable for Electric and Hybrid variants

I’ve taken delivery of my soundproofing / insulation stuff, so door cards will be coming off soon, so inside the doors will be hoovered out. (y)

Stealing the van is a whole different ball game.
I have a least three different discrete anti theft devices fitted - even after they have broken into the van they are not going to steal the van.

Deadlocks are obviously a good idea for Cab doors, but what are people's thoughts about how useful they are in a Coach built, with Hab door and plastic windows?

On our van, I fitted a Heosafe deadlock to the to the hab door, Lock M Out window locks on all the handles and WiFi window contacts that set off the alarm and send me a push message if a window is opened past a 5mm gap if somebody tries to force one.

Yep. Growler Alarm / stickers / Neon lights, clamp on steering wheel, VINchip markings and microdots on all clear glass and plastics……plus my hidden stuff. So even if they’d have gone in, they wouldn’t have been able to steal it without a lot of time and effort.

Took them under 2 minutes to overcome the Fiat fitted locks, that’s why we decided to go for the Deadlocks as yet another visible deterrent. (y)

I’ve got these extra locking mechanism on the windows……

With the deadlocks on, if they decide to take the time and energy to break through one of the plastic windows, they still won’t be able to open any of the doors from the inside. Yes, they could still get in to try and steal contents, but the alarm would activate as it did when they forced the door lock, which frightened them off. (y)
