so today after just leaving a beautiful site a French mini decided to overtake and cut in front of me catching my n/s wing and damaging his rear quarter.
He apologised and said he was late for work, can’t speak to insurance until tomorrow.
Now the question is do I get the insurance to repair it or do it myself?

1st step try his insurance, keep photos for proof.

If this doesn't work get a quote from a small independent body shop for repairs telling them you intend to pay yourself, if close to your policy excess then pay yourself. If lots more than your excess your own insurance is probably best.

Suggest at this stage you don't involve your own insurers.

I think you are obliged to inform your own insurance company regardless..

A while back someone posted a document on here, to be used to notify your own insurance, covering yourself but without making any claim. I think I have a copy on the laptop and if I recall I will look tomorrow and post a copy or link

Was the other driver French and did he fill in his EU insurance accident statement form? Did you exchange insurance details?
If either of these occurred, I think you are duty bound to inform your insurance company, even if you don’t claim.

Yes the other driver was French, he made a phone call and then told me that they didn’t want my registration which I thought was strange.
No forms filled in, we did exchange details so I will call tomorrow and let them know .

Going to take inner skirt out tomorrow if rain holds off and see if I can pop it back:pray:

Following my comments in #8 last night, I have found the information, which is a reporting recommendation rather than a document. I think that it was originally posted on here by a member by the name of Geoff:

[quoted] To prevent any Claim against you in a NO FAULT CLAIM. Follow this procedure-

Write to the other driver claiming against him/her. They will have to notify their insurance company if they want to be covered.

You must notify your insurance company that there was an accident. Write very clearly 'This is not a claim' - for information only. Enclose a copy of the letter to the other driver.

Your insurers will probably send you a 'Claim Form', because it is the only form they have to obtain information (and it traps people into having made a claim) Provide the information they request but cross through the words 'Claim Form' and notate beside the crossing out that this is for information only/not a claim. Send a covering letter stating the same, copy that to your Broker, if any.

You have not made a claim. The consequence is they cannot try to do knock-for-knock and later claim they settled. If they did you would have recourse to the Insurance Ombudsman. [end quoted text]

You could just settle directly if you are still in the area. A photo to a good bodyshop will give you an idea on cost.

I would guess about £400 would cover it unless it needs a bumper.

His insurance would be the safest way.

Some insurance companies will still stick the price up even if you don't claim and can prove it was NOT your fault.

For instance, last year my company car was hit while correctly parked outside my house. I was in bed at the time. The other driver admitted full blame. The only involvement I had was phoning the the lease company telling them what had happened and waiting for a new car. I did not even fill any forms in.

So therefore I had made no claim against anyone and no claim was made against me.

Yet when looking for insurance for the MH or our own car the insurance companies always ask "have you been involved in any incidents in the last 5 years"? When I explain what had happened many say, "That is a no fault incident, but there will be a little loading because of it". Swintons itemised that loading as £8. Which is cheeky when I was totally not involved !

As above.

Its when you come to shop around for insurance, there is always a clause, ' have you been involved in any claims in the last 5 years, regardless of blame'.

Once you have logged a no fault claim your shopping around for insurance will definitely be more expensive.

It is easy to forget that it is a No Claim Discount and not a No Blame Discount. Statistics seem to show that anyone involved in an accident (even if blameless) is more likely to have another accident

When getting a recent quote it was pointed out to me that even with Protected No Claims the premium would be likely to rise after any accident

I queried this and was told the NCB might be protected but there would be a rise in the base premium so the total cost would still increase!

Spoke to insurance today and they are happy for me to wait until I return after the 16th to log the incident, Tod them I don’t want to claim and they have said it won’t effect NCB.
Wait and see I guess.

My recent insurance renewal quoted an increase of fifty quid so I tried a comparison site and the amount I could have saved was not worth bothering about.
I needed additional cover for which I was prepared to pay for but I was told this was not possible and I would have to take out a new policy. This I did and my annual premium was almost halved,

It really is a mad market.

Chipsaway fixed both sides of our 2013 Mercedes front bumper for just over £100.
All done in a couple of hours & to an amazing standard, twas metallic paint too.

Bad news it needs done again, yes both sides & I'm gonna get some stickers saying "Hers".

Watch this space for my funeral arrangements.

So today I have received a letter from my insurance saying that the Frenchman has decided to claim as it was my fault  to say I’m peeved is an understatement.

So the insurance have said because the police where not in attendance and also no dashcam that we are going 50/50 and insurance has over doubled.
Lesson learnt and dashcam on order.

Ironside
I got broken into, lock damaged.
Advised insurers but didnt claim.
Held against me when renewal came up.

I think on here people have said, that given the excess and future loading they would not claim for anything less than £750.

Our first thought is usually to phone the police and insurance company.
But with a damaged lock and even some theft I might just say nothing and suck it up.
Especially if no one else involved. Same if someone comes round the corner and smashes a mirror and drives off. Worth thinking about before it happens

An unfortunate truth that there are people who are far from being honest or fair.

Bottom line, for any small bump / accident make sure the first thing you do is speak to other drivers / pedestrians to get witnesses. Don’t move your vehicle, take loads of pics, and if any any doubt phone Police right away.

Someone hit my car when I was stationary, I asked if I needed a witness and he said “of course not, it was my fault” so I didn’t bother taking details from the many people there. He later came back and said I hit him! I proved via the damage pics that it was physically impossible to have occurred in the way he described (he said I drove into his stationary vehicle). I demanded that the insurance company pursued the other guy and it eventually went to court where the other chap lost!

I now have a dual (front/rear), Wi-Fi connected dashcam fitted to my car.

....and this thread has reminded me that I’d better fit one to the MoHo.
