We travelled 310 miles today from Germany through Denmark and across to Sweden. We needed to stop and found what we thought looked a promising farm stop off on park 4 night.

We turn up and a very friendly guy meets us and shows us to our ‘space’. It turns out it’s a stretch of dirt track down the side of his farm buildings. Oh well it’s only €8 we think... only it’s not... he says that because we are tall (the vehicle, not us) we must pay €15.

We use one allocated slot and, as far as I know, there’s no charge levied in Sweden for air usage. Fifteen bloody euros to park on a patch of dirt!!!!

We don’t need or want any services which is just as well because they’re extra. We can’t even dump our black waste.

Anyone else come across this sneaky method of unfairness?

The word lång in Swedish can be used for both tall and long so maybe he mistranslated if he spoke to you in English. If he charged you in euros maybe he was adding an exchange premium to SK ?
:)

Have a great time in Sweden.

We stopped at a farm in France. As soon as we pulled up the old lady was out. Pointed to the toilet block. Pointed where to park and then legged it with €10 before we had a chance to look round. What a dump.

Could not find anywhere for the toilet waste so used one of the toilets only to find it did not flush. Oh well onto the next site / aire

As for the OP I would have just moved on.

Thanks Annie - we're only passing through this time on our way up to Norway. We will take some time to enjoy it on the way back though.

He said tall and long... we're only 8.6 mts so I wouldn't say unusually long - he asked for euros, so no excuse on the exchange rate... I just felt annoyed at the sneakishness of it all. It wasn't a site, just a stopover, more like the type of thing you get on French Passion... it was down on Park4Night as farm/vinyard. Oh well - we won't darken his doorstep again!

At the end of the day it's a place to stop and we'll be moving on first thing heading into Norway...

That IS long ... so I suspect that's why you were charged extra.

I was thinking the same most ferries charge extra if your over 6 mtrs so I would consider 8.6 longer than most

We've been all over the place in the last 14-15 years, and apart from ferries, have never been charged extra for length or size, ie, a pitch is a pitch, but some are just smaller/bigger than others. Matey was definitely trying it on by the sounds of it.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Mind you, just outside Glastonbury there's a site and a friend was going back to and said it was £8.00 a night. We followed her in and it was £14.00 for us. No ehu with that AND we had to be off at 9.00 am as they had an inspection due and couldn't be seen with more units than listed. Think it was a CL type site. It was only because we were with our friend we stayed.
What's this all about charging for a dog? Our dog stays in or near our Moho and always on a lead outside. Any poo is always picked up. What does the dog get for the £4.50 some places want to charge?

Because unfortunately some dog owners are not as responsible as you, I have been to sites where dogs run free crapping were they want, peeing up the side of the awning, Don’t get me started about ankle biters
(Children). That’s the main reason for not using sites and doing most of my travelling out of season,

We were at a campsite in Croatia and they asked if we had a motorbike so i answered yes just in case it was a registration thing to get in and out while we were there. 3 euros extra a day they said. Its in the garage I said. Still 3 euros more they said. Or 18 euros less for you I said as i got in the van. They changed their mind

We fitted onto the pitch so take the same amount of room as anyone else. I don’t understand why length and height should make any difference.

Of course on ferries we do incur higher fees but ferries don’t have marked pitches, meaning a longer vehicle does actually take up more room, so it’s fair.

I was going to leave an honest review but he was such a nice guy I didn’t have the heart to do so. He was running the place on his own and looking after his disabled mother... so, apart from charging unfair fees and having a crappy site, he was a good guy! :)

Same as on the motorway tolls , loads more euros if over 3m high! Why?
Tag axles more again but if your double rear wheels are side by side not?

£4.50 for a dog? That's cheap! Stay away from Corsica. :)

I don't agree that you should be charged extra, just that you do have a BIG one and that may be the reason in the owner's eyes you should be 'fleeced'! :giggle:

I’m being reminded why we don’t normally use sites.

The one we stopped on yesterday evening is all ‘eco warrior’ style... there’s a sign urging folk to save water as their supply is from a borehole. In order to comply with this edict you are to go to the garage up the road to fill with water. WTF!

This site is €20 per night €25 with EHU... surely it’s not unreasonable to expect to have water on a site?

Now then, that really is "taking the pi$$".
