I’ve just driven from Newark to Melrose, and the van has gone beautifully. On smooth roads it was excellent.
But, on rough roads at low speeds and moving off, it sounds like a bag of nails!
It sounds like a metal cowling or something is vibrating, “clattering”.
I’ve had the bonnet up, pulled at anything I can reach, with nothing coming to light. I can’t see any signs of chaffing.
I’ve had a very brief look underneath but too brief to show anything.
I’d say noise is nearside front.
Has anybody experienced similar, or any suggestions, apart from make an appointment at garage. Passed Mot before we left.
Forgot to say Fiat X250

I should have said, on tickover, when not moving, say stood in traffic, until I blip the throttle

Had similar just recently on one of our cars.
Was the brake dust shield on nearside front - one of the welds had broken allowing the guard to touch the brake disk. Bent the guard away from disk, and job was a goodun
Might be worth a check ?

exhaust rattle?

Sounds worth a look: I’ll let you know!

Certainly sounds like a thin metal shield/guard has lost or broken a fixing.
Possibly front exhaust or turbo heat shield

Mine sounds like bag of nails seemingly after it’s rained but still haven’t found the cause

Ettrickside garage at Selkirk is not far from you if you need it looked at
They do a fair amount of motorhomes
I would give them a ring first

Mine was a loose tail pipe trim on the exhaust - fitted to extend standard exhaust past bodywork on MH

If it's when moving check that the tyres haven't picked up something. I once had a horrendous noise from the front, turned out to be a bit of insulating tape the tyre had picked up and it hitting the wheel arch.

Apologies: I’m so pleased with general roadnoise level I have, as a politician would say, “conflated” the two issues.
At slow speed, on rough surfaces = bag of nails, say 5-10mph, car parks and the like. Also when ticking over.
Metal guards sounds promising and I’ll root around and maybe give garage at Selkirk a ring.
Thanks to you all
