'IF' you find yourself without any signal, the Apps are useless, having the books are great as a backup.

I have loaded all the sites on my phone from CamperContact so it is possible to still use it without a signal. ( cost 5.99 € a year) Although traveling around the EU I have never found I couldn't get a signal, well not for very long. One thing I like about CamperContact is I can use the phone as I would a GPS which will guide me straight to the site. And as already been said the Apps appear to be far more up to date and more sites on them. Plus you can read more current reviews of the site. For my preferences there is no contest , the apps win.
