My wife's 3 mobile contract is just about up and having read a few posts about an OFCOM ruling that 3 had to changed their contracts re tethering and a few other things, I popped in to a 3 shop and it was confirmed to me that yes, tethering in Europe is now allowed apart from the 'Essential' plan. It was stated on a special internal web site not available to the public!

Don't know if any Funsters have tried tethering with 3 abroad recently - we will in a month or so. Then we will decide if we are moving this contract over to Vodafone. I don't know if 3 have been forced to stop throttling or now use 4G in Europe though.

Don’t bother tethering now, use a mifi and a data sim with 3 on a 12 month contact £10 for 20gb per month. Worked well all over France and Spain this last 2 years.

Agree with you @Mark McG, my contract is with Vodafone and we were very happy with the service in France and Italy last year. So much so that the MiFi Device didn't get used! We only use it for email, web browsing and radio streaming as we don't watch live TV when away.

I will try and do a comparison when we are away in March!

I hope I have done the right thing here as I cancelled my mifi contract with 3 yesterday and took there unlimited wifi, unlimited minutes and unlimited tx with tethering for £20 per month. Am off to Geneva again on Wednesday so will see how it goes.

We took out a Three phone sim contract for 100gb data plus unlimited texts & calls costing £20 a month (12 months) in October last year. We used it for 2 months abroad (France, Portugal & Spain) from November to January and had no issues at all with tethering any of our kit.

How did it go? I am considering stopping using a dongle and just using my phone for tethering.

Am using mine on tethering now from Gex and it works great. You do have to watch you dont go over the 19gb per month though, even though its unlimited in the UK they only allow 19gb per month abroad.

We have a 3 phone plan giving us 100gb of data, unlimited calls and texts, it worked perfectly when tethering whilst we were away from November to January.

I have 3 unlimited data for £20.50 now and use it to stream Now tv, Amazon prime TV, Netflix etc through my TV using a Roku device and it works a treat. We were in Holland at Easter and noted that I was getting 4G data for the first time and it streamed a treat.

I don’t know about tethering but we have been getting mostly a good 4G signal on our MIFI in France

I'm off to France on Monday so i hope my 3 will work OK there? I know the limit is 19gb as i have 30gb on my contract but didn't know i wouldn't be able to tether, i do this quote a lot abroad.

Hi I have just upgraded my phone contract.

I have stayed with Vodafone as there signal has always been good abroad. When we used 3 in the MiFi it was ok not fantastic.

Vodafone told me to stay away from 3 because at peak times they slow their data down. But Vodafone would say this to keep me!!

Carphone warehouse independent to any network I presume also told me the same though!!

Vodafone does seem to have better coverage in the eu than here sometimes!

Have the 3 unlimited everything streaming to TV tethering firestick and tablet no probs at all (tablet now) 45gb used so far this month (19 gb) in EU but have back up PAYG 3 data card as back up if needed
Tried Vodafone briefly but cancelled within 14 days as signal for my area was crap .

@Jasz in the end we changed to Vodafone as we got a good deal with mobiles.co.uk. and as stated else where, no limits etc.

I now have to think about my contract as it is due to expire with Vodafone. I need to have a conversation with them to see what they will offer as I am happy to stay if the price is right.

I am looking at Voxi but no idea what they are like, although they use the Vodafone network and again you can tether and there are no limits on data usage abroad.

Have a look at plusnet, they use EE network and I get 4G in France & Spain. Much better than Three, been there

I have started doing just that..Got 100 gb on Vodaphone and it is working brilliant in Spain and Portugal.Watching t v on it and used 17 gb this month. Very quick.BUSBY.

I had three mifi and sim £9 for 20 gb, started contract from London 3 shop, kept having to ring technical to get connected when in France, they said they will have to end the contract as they couldn’t guarantee a years service, only short periods abroad at a time.

On 3 at the moment, just back from Holland, Belgium and France where for the first time I got 4g everywhere. When on 3G they always defer to Bouygues Telecom in France which was often slow, had to disable automatic network selection and manually choose another provider.
Was going to swap to Vodafone but missed out on their latest deal so will persevere.

May go with Voxi as it is a sort of monthly prepay with 30 days notice and wait for a Vodafone deal etc with mobiles.co.uk. We shall see!

We have both a 3 unlimited contract and vodaphone 100gb month deal conparing the 2 side by side vodaphone was faster in malta slso able to use full allowance unlike 3 which is limited to 17gb or might be 19gb per month abroad what swung vodaphone for us is that ww can use it free in turkey while we stay at our holiday place 3 dosnt do turkey as an at home destination further benefit with voda is u can mske calls to mob and landlines of country you are in for free within your allowance

No problem with tethering abroad unless you're on an essentials plan which I don't think you are.

I looked into Voxi but I contacted them via live chat and they are not like Vodafone, Voxi only allow 2 months roaming in 4 like most other networks.

Just come back from France, Spain and Portugal, using a mifi on a 40gig data contract with 3. According to speedtest.net we only got 3g speeds in all the above countries.
Using a Portuguese NOS card speeds tripled.

My phone is currently on a low data package with 3. I was close to upgrading to their unlimited data plan and then yesterday couldn't even get 3G at home although normally get 4G on it so now I'm not sure. I am also concerned about their coverage in the West side of Scotland.
My wi-fi dongle is with EE and generally we get good coverage, but it is quite a bit more expensive for what you get. The Vodafone site doesn't show a national coverage map - hard to know which way to go (n)

When we had 3 couldn't get a signal near Corpach on the Mallaig road. Vodafone seems to have better coverage as we can now sometimes get a signal with them!

Was it throttle to under 20 gig though?

Jasz, we have now given up on dongles, site Wi-fi, etc and just use tethering from our vodaphone iphones. Just watched the match tonight on BT on my iPad Pro tethered to my phone, fab connection and used 2gb of data!
On the caravan club site in Knaresborough with a decent 4g signal.
