Has anybody changed their MH 15" wheels (Standard Fiat steel) to 16" Alloys with relevant tyres?

What differences did you find regarding ride quality, handling etc.

I'd be interested in the answer as I thought the PCDs were different so the larger rims wouldn't fit the existing hubs.

The ones for the Maxi chassis are different but they do one that fits the light chassis it's been an option since 2015.

I change ours from 15" steels to 16" alloys, but there is not a lot of choice if your wheels are 5x118 PCD that are rated for commercial and motorhome weight.
We were running on 15" 215 wide Continental Vanco's which were an atrocious ride not helped by the high pressures they had to run at.
I mounted 225 wide Hankook Vantra's on the 16" rims which meant that I could drop the pressures.
Hankook's are a much smoother, quieter ride, and we no longer have a teeth being rattled out.

I fitted these. https://www.wheelbasealloys.com/alloy-wheels/supermetal/hammer/grey-polished/16-inch

Can I ask how long have you had the wheels and have you had any problems with corrosion? The reason I ask is I have a set of 15" and am on the 2nd set which are going the same way as 1st set.

What depth of tyre are those?

I'm thinking if going to 225 75 r16 or 245 75 r16 on my transit.

The stock 235 70 are quite firm....

Cheers James

With alloys it's best to avoid the diamond cut one they always corrode when the lacquer gets chipped. Best to stick with the solid colour ones.

I went for a 65 ratio to keep close to the rolling diameter of the 15" Continental Vanco's so the speedo reads as before.

Fitted them 20 months ago and one small stone chip on one wheel and not a sign of any corrosion or lacquer worm on any of them. (y)

But if you had fitted 75's you would have improved the speedo accuracy. :giggle:

The 65's are a slightly bigger rolling diameter so has improved the vans speedo accuracy a tad, but I go by the GPS speedo anyway, plus if I
fitted 75 ratio tyres our van would probably run out of puff trying to turn the bigger diameter. :ROFLMAO:

Thanks for the help but can I ask one more question..... Our van is a 2016 Bavaria i740 Allure (identical to 2016 Pilote i740). When we purchased the van it was 2 years old. It had/has the 15 wheels with Conti tyres.
......Why does my speedo consistently read a higher speed than my satnav (i.e. Satnav 64 - Speedo 72 ish? This, and comfort and economy, were my main reasons for looking at 16 wheels.

By construction & use regulations the speedo tolerance is -0/+10% +10kmh for the life of the vehicle.
Fiat ones are nearly always to the top end of the tolerance, what I have noticed they are a bit more accurate with a KPH dial than a MPH one.

I spoke to Supermetal, the manufacturer of the Hammer alloys, and apparently they don’t wet lacquer them, after the diamond cut/polish they are re powder coated with clear powder coat.

They say that the polished part is as hard wearing as the rest of the powder coating……time will tell 👍🏼

I was looking at Supermetal alloys last year. The think that concerned me was the load rating. Do they come with a certificate for load rating?

I have the same problem 20 months old and the lacquer is peeling already
Did you get yours replaced by the supplier
Surprisingly it’s only both rear wheels that are affected

I think Lenny that they don't even need to be chipped. It seems to spread inwards from the edges. However it's a really easy fix if you catch it before the breach in the lacquer starts to corrode the alloy by simply flattening it and reapplying lacquer.

If the alloy starts to corrode then you need to cut it back to bare alloy and then reapply the lacquer.

I agree it's not the best design of a wheel to lacquer bare alloy but it does make it very easy to keep up to so long as you don't let it spread.

And they do look very cool.

Yes I have had one set of replacements and have sent the supplier an e mail yesterday and waiting a reply if he does offer to replace them I will go for silver one's.

I swapped from 15 inch to 16 inch on my peugeot boxer. Fitted all terrain tyres and they are great. No increase in road noise at all.
Great handling and better grip and clearance.

Would you remove the tyres to do this and did you do just the diamond edges or the entire wheel?

That's a very good question. If its creeping around the edge of the rim then yes, to do a proper job you would have to remove the tyre. If its creeping from the sides of the spoke effect area then no, it can be done without removing the tyre.

Hi Andy, I guess there are loads of folks/followers of this chap that will be changing their wheels & tyres to a "Bad Ass" wheels like yours.
Question is have you bought the "Bad Ass" Tee Shirt yet?:giggle:.
SO! have you?:giggle:
10.000 mile review and all is well apparently, as discussed below.

One 'last' question, how do I find out what chassis my i740 uses?

Look at the rear suspension, if it has leaf springs and chassis is painted white it will be Fiat.
If the chassis is galvanised and has torsion bar suspension it will be Al-Ko, also it will have an Al-Ko plate under the bonnet next to the Fiat one & a green plate with axle rating on the chassis near the rear axle.
