My dad was a paramedic....his driving was terrible.

And anyone who's ever watched starsky n hutch, the professionals, the Sweeney , tj hooker, Smokey n the bandit, the dukes of hazard and the a team will all tell you the police are rubbish drivers

There was a tale going round at one point about a Television Celeb, who`s car pulled over under a motorway Bridge and he got out to "relieve himself", Mr plod pulled up and allegedly said "is that your car sir", to which the Celeb replied "yes officer", and "have you been drinking sir", to which he duly replied "Yes". Having been breathalysed and duly found to be over the limit, it was only at that point the officer noticed that the car was Left hand drive and the Chauffeur was in the driving seat!.

North Yorkshire police are using cameras purely to raise money,they have sod all to do with road safety. They hide behind buildings and bushes and the ones on motor cycles hide and just leave a tripod on the road side. And before all you angles say you shouldn’t speed i bet none of you haven’t accidentally gone over to 33-35mph at some time .

I agree with that, specifically the A19.

There are a number of dangerous roads in N Yorks, particularly the Stokesley - Helmsley road and the Whitby Moors road from Teesside. There have been numerous fatalities and serious injuries, however, there are rarely 'traffic safety camera' vehicles on these roads, compared with the A19.

The A19 (south of Teesisde) is a dual carriageway and rarely 'busy', although there are occasional accidents. I've even seen two camera vehicles (one in a lay-by and another on a bridge) after 7.00pm one evening last summer.

I considered a freedom of information request to the Chief Constable asking for statistics in terms of which are the top ten identified 'dangerous roads', what percentage of time are cameras deployed on them and where does the A19 feature in these statistics in terms of being dangerous and revenue raised. I think it would be interesting reading.

I'd be very surprised if the A19 wasn't the top 'earner'.

I fully support clamping down on 'speeding' but equally believe that resources should be deployed to actual target the known accident black spots.

If the police were serious about road safety and not just interested in making money why not use more average speed cameras where practical? I don’t think people on here are saying they want to speed but these mobile cameras seem to be catching more people just over the limit than serious offenders. With average speed cameras just about everybody slows down. Also there revenue would drop

The OP said 42500 tickets issued after the event, so how many "accidents' - not injuries mind - were caused by those 42500 henous "crimes"? How much human laboour was involved in issuing 42500 tickets? Quite an industry they have there me thinks... License to print money?

Should have probably have mentioned that I've never had a driving ticket in 36 years of cars bikes and trucks. I might add, not because I don't speed, but because I drive to the road conditions, which is usually in my experience, 10x better than Panda car drivers

In fact, I would suggest that video is counter productive as it says to the viewer that if they drive like an arse then they'll hurt someone - which is not only obvious, but as no-one thinks they ever do or will drive like that, it re-enforces the notion that it'll never actually happen to them

The real cause of your video accident is poor driving standards. Little pride (or interest) is taken in driving now days, cars are commodities. Look at middle lane hoggers, badly adjusted headlights, inconsiderate parkers etc the thin end of the wedge the coppers should be dealing with... maybe not, it's easier to sit in a nice warm van with a camera innit...

Coppers do not sit in nice warm vans with a camera. Civilian employees undertake that task exactly in order to free up police officers for other matters, and if the priority is to be "badly adjusted headlights, inconsiderate parkers etc" then that is the wrong priority. In the scale of things these items might be annoying but hardly deserve the diverting of police officers from more important tasks. Robbery, drug dealing, conning elderly people, knife crime to name but a few areas might just possibly be a little higher up the priorities list I would suggest.

There are road policing units in every police area but these are smaller than they once were and are often diverted from their core function to more pressing matters. Its a matter of resources and priorities. Not enough of the first and too many of the second.

Joey Dunlop was stoped speeding when he was testing a bike on the roads in America, he had his trademark yellow helmet & leathers on , the policeman stopped him and asked who did he think he was joey Dunlop ? , yes I am joey Dunlop says joey , policeman says to report to the police station at 6pm , when joey arrived they took him through to the rear of the station where they had a barbecue & beers ready for him

The A19 (south of Teesside) is a dual carriageway and rarely 'busy', although there are occasional accidents.

There have been at least three in the past week which have led to the road being closed for a considerable time on each occasion.
Even worse north of Teesside, there seems to be crashes daily round the Hartlepool/Wolviston area.

Took an advanced motorcycle course about 20 years ago which was run by the Durham police. One weekend we all went out for a run around Northumbria. After meeting at a motorway services the police riders said they knew a nice scenic route and to follow them. After joining the motorway they were straight up to 85 mph and expected us to keep up.

Presumably your experience whatever it was, was many years ago since “panda cars” have been long retired as have their drivers. Unless you have had some specialist training I expect the majority of police drivers today could run rings around you. By the way road conditions do include speed limits. Your perception of road conditions may be totally different to another driver and is subjective and therefore open to error. That is why speed limits are compulsory, they apply to all drivers regardless of the skill level they like to think they have. Speed limits are not all 20mph for the very good reason that a number of things are taken into account when they are set.

Anyway, my point was that there is a current understanding that speed=death/destruction and massive resources must be used indiscriminately to target speed.

As an example, we are told that the 94 year old Duke of Edinburgh has pulled across a busy single file road from one side-road to another, and hit a people carrier. The councils response is now in reducing the speed limit !!!! WTF? Where is speed involved? Bad driving, age related physical deteriation, medical issues maybe, but speed?

The council had already got that in hand before the accident. They were due to make the formal decision today, so nothing to do with the accident. Supposedly the road is a fast rat run and there have been several accidents on it.

Well of course speed restrictions must be indiscriminate. Unless you would prefer electronic signs that could go up or down as people who think they are great drivers approach. It is a fact that a speeding car which hits a pedestrian at 40 MPH will probably result in very serious injury or death. The same car doing 25 and the pedestrian may well Stand a better chance.

What is your suggestion on how speed should be regulated?

Wrong on three counts.

He is 97.
The road is 3 lanes wide, 2 running lanes and a central turning lane.
Nobody knows where he was going, he was T boned from the right as he pulled out of the side road.
