As per title really. Is the power supplied in the average campsite so unreliable as to make it worth investing? And if I get one, is it a DIY install?

I don’t think you will get many surges on UK grid. Most equipment is built to take wide AC input. I would no bother.
Whats the toys you worry about?

Depends where you're going. The problem is mostly lightning strikes, and the UK is not much affected. Markdorf, home of Schaudt who make EBLs, is right at the centre of one of the worst locations in Europe.

On a van is pointless, how you going to discharge a SPD? You need to have that at source, bollard, before it enters the van.

I think people use them to minimise problems for over and under voltage that you might get on a European camp site. Not just surges. I don't think fridges like the wrong voltage?

In that case you want a voltage stabiliser, which will probably have surge protection built in as well.
