Off to Norway next week and got to thinking about spare keys!

We have two sets of keys and I am thinking that
a) I need to put spare keys for ignition and alarm somewhere internally
b) Would be good to have safe external place for door key

What do others do regarding security for putting spare keys somewhere?

Maybe NOT a Q to ask on a relatively public forum!

Or are you looking for help finding them?

Just a thought!

I have one set with me and the wife has the other set. I wouldn't leave a set in your van because if its stolen you won't have 2 sets of keys to show to your insurer.
Could be an expensive set.

Ignition key left inside on units or under mattress. Usually with spare as well. Alarm fob and hab door key in magnetic key box on chassis under step where it is easier for me to reach under.

Cracking, you get my drift.

Not even thought about that option!
You could have an extra spare hab door key made and put that under the chassis somewhere in case you were locked out. Most insurance covers replacement keys so you could then get a set made but if you both had a set the chances of losing both are very remote.

Just before I went away, van went into the garage for some work - garage lost my spare keys! They’re a well known and trusted local family business, nothing underhand here.

I got a highly embarrassed phone call from them asking me if I had a spare set. If they’ve not turned up by the time I get back in 3 weeks, then I’ll start getting a new set cut and they will pay for them.

Where do I normally keep spare keys? Easy, on holiday Mrs F keeps the spare set in her handbag. Main set stays with me.

Not sure if folks are aware the lengths an insurance company will go to not pay out. But if buying spare keys to hide only use cash and no names or addresses.
A spare ignition key with remote lock/unlock function will cost best part of £200 if not more these days.

Swmbo doesn't like carrying a set of keys so I usually end up with both sets in my pockets. Alternative is to leave one set at home. Leaving a key in a magnetic box somewhere :Eeek:, might as well not bother to lock it at all.

Have three sets of keys then if the van gets stolen you will have two sets to show the insurance
Then hide a set sumwher in the van with a hab for key sumwher only you know whare plenty of places under the van.

If you can find our spare set on our van, then I will happily sign the V5 over to you. (y) :giggle:

Same here, I have one set, wife has other but we also have a third set at home just in case, which could be sent on to us if ever needed

I x set at home 3 other people know where they are .
3 x cut door keys. we keep 2 x with us 1x safe place
1 x set we keep on us

I have a complete spare set at home, the ignition and alarm on a ring with my pretty fob thats on a clip that I take off and clip on the Hab door extra key that is kept and swapped in a key safe inside our gas cupboard (that has to be opened from inside) so that if parked up off grid/road side/carpark/pub we are not in charge of a motor vehicle, the cupboard/garage door keys are hung in Hab cupboard - keeps the bulk down.

Spares are left at home. Not yet old enough to forget things. 😜😜😜

You will have to wait your turn as Reallyretired gets first dibs. 😜

Very generous, but I will pass on that. I suspect if you're that confident it may be for the same reason you could'nt find mine ie. they aint there. My arthritis and vertigo would greatly limit the areas I could search. Not to mention that you are over 100miles away.

Yes very confident, I had them in a different place to start with then had a wizard idea and moved them, the problem was when I changed a key and wanted to swap on the hidden set I spent an hour or more searching the area they were originally hidden convince that they must be there somewhere or someone had had them away, then the next day when I had calmed down and had a re-think, I remembered where they were and then the fun of getting to them began.

No.

First dibs went to us. Tis written in chronological post order.

Tis now contractual and could be argued in law, god forbid in parliament...otherwise someone would need a bung/favour

Written in the post #19 was my offer to Reallyretired which preceded your request so as I said Reallyretired had first dibs, but he has declined on the basis of being not in the prime of his life and the realisation that he will probably have bugger all chance of finding them. :giggle:

Okey dokey, you're welcome to have a go.
I give you the same opportunities as a potential thief would have and a concession of extra time due to your lack of experience in thievery which I hope is the case.
You can come to our house at any time of your choosing, day or night and from the time we are alerted to your presence by our driveway alarms and CCTV I will give you half an hour, no I'll be generous say one hour before taking a baseball bat to you as I would any common thief I found trying to get into our van, but of course, you have the added advantage that a thief does not have in knowing that keys are available for an easy entry and drive away.
Alternatively when we are in Germany later this year, will give you ample warning of where we will be parked up and away from the van for several hours, so you can then attempt to find the spare set of keys to drive your prize home, I can't be fairer than that. :giggle:

Dont say that to a plant operator!!
You will be surprised at the places we think of looking where we think the driver before has hidden the keys, might have lost my touch now, I have been out of the plant game a few years, now I KNOW where all the keys are for the machines👍👍😁😁
