I thought it was a good idea at first but i came across Google Maps 'Pluscodes' the other day, seems like they work very similar. I dropped a virtual pin in a field and it gave a code. It will navigate you to it (the last bit on foot of course) perhaps not quite so easy to remember though 🤔

Ive never heard of this but will try and download it,it will be good when lockdowns over and we are amongst crowds again, like shows or carboots or concerts, where you need to meet up, or having a walk around a town when on holiday and you both like to look at different things :)

GPS for civilian use is deliberately downgraded.
Also the height/depth feature is disabled.

W3W uses triangulation between mobile phone masts
Hence in urban areas (or festival sites, for which it was invented) it is accurate to within 3m.
It uses GPS, not a mobile signal. It will also work in a more limited way without any mobile signal.

Not actually used it but have the app on my phone as I do at lot of off road cycling and fell walking. I have heard lots of good stories of the emergency services finding people in the middle of nowhere and seems to be widely used.

I like the idea of what3words, and have it installed.
However a question. If W3W is accurate to within a 3 meter square, are navigation systems such as Google, TomTom etc. capable of navigating with the same accuracy. I was always under the impression that although military GPS was highly accurate, civilian GPS was deliberately downgraded.
It used to be, but they turned off the 'wobble'.
Now, if your device can 'see' enough satellites accuracy can be 1 metre

Being in France I just tried liberté.égalité.fraternité. Gobsmackingly, that location is not in France, it is in Brazil.
Perhaps they are trying to tell you something 🤔🙄

Pah.....with a good book, I could do that in the bog, easy! 🤪😂
Probably not but GPS will do the same, interestingly she struggled for a phone signal. in which case if you do not have a phone signal both W3W and GPS will be like a chocolate tea pot. A PLB is the way to go :)

I didn’t have phone signal but managed to use W3W and used my phone to make the 999 call. My number didn’t show up for the 999 operator as I wasn’t using the normal network.
