Staying in your house, or for those of us in mainland UK travelling thoughout England, Wales and Scotland?

Staying at home and doing a varied range of day trips and activities over the period of your ‘holiday’

M-J my wife agrees with you, and that is an accepted definition. My problem is that the media seems to be changing it into a holiday not involving a plane or boat (or Chunnel).

I keep hearing it on the tv and find myself telling them they are wrong :drunk:

In the 1950s, have to say, parents insisted on going somewhere different every year last week in June &/or first week in July to give themselves and both their daughters the chance to see other places and stay at Guest Houses (BB& EM) so on best behaviour wherever - always in the UK of course, and we always spent other school holidays at home with mom and sometimes dad would book time off work too and we'd all go out for the day together. We just called them all holidays and if anyone asked us for details, the Q was always Did you go away? - when some folk would answer, Argate! for laughs. Wasn't only us who'd frequently reply No , but we went to eg Clent, Shrewsbury to see my auntie, Blackpool/Weston/Rhyl for the day, or wherever it was that God's wonderful had happened to run an excursion to, that week.

~cation isn't English!

Staycation is a yank holiday at home not in the country.the correct expression the bbc should be be using is holiday in Britain or UK.
In lincoln " trips" is an expression for the works shutdown period (summer holiday)
Trips refer to the day trips taken to the coast skegness etc.

In Edinburgh it was called "The Trades" in Glasgow the "Fair" with the other cities and towns in industrial Scotland having a similar two week "shut down" as workers downed tools, put on the glad rags and headed to all points ( Blackpool, Scarborough, Butlins etc). When I worked in Ferranti there was a deduction from our weekly pay to ensure that we had money for the two week break.

On a few occasions we went "Golden Rail" from Edinburgh to Torquay, wow the high life...we went on the "sleeper" service (change carriages at Bristol Temple Meades and trains at Newton Abbot). Hahaha, just reminded Mrs Dram about the time tiny Dram shared the bunk with me while she gave it the big zzz in the bunk above.

And about that time deals to the Costa's started to get in gear with it's "guaranteed" sunshine message.

Just got the van in 2019, blasted Covid has buggered up our plans to a large degree BUT look out Torquay (and Area) as Arnie and General McArthur put it, I'll be back ( less tiny Dram of course, who now has wife, two daughters and a new mini Schnauzer).

Ps Keep the Exmoor Gold on chill till I get there.

In my case, for someone who is self-employed, a staycation would be staying at home to have a holiday and if the phone rings then go out to do a job. So not really a proper holiday but more a working holiday.
This is the reason I want to have my usual holiday in France and Germany, so I don't have to answer the bloody phone for 2 weeks. Yes of course I can do this in the UK but it's not the same. So for all those who insist on us having a staycation they can **** off.

I read references to staycation often. I've never been in the presence of someone saying "innit, know what I mean?" and the only place I've read it is on motorhomefun.

Staycation mean spending a lot more money than if you were abroad

The press have taken “staycation” and now misuse it to make a UK holiday sound like a second class, last resort holiday that you only take if you can’t take a foreign holiday. I hate the way they misuse it. Also we have holidays not vacations.
