What am I doing wrong?

Every time I have to take of a wheel on the Van I really struggle, someone must know but whats the easiest way to get the wheel back into alignment with them little pins and get the first bolt in?
I can hardly lift the wheel and it wont slide, being rubber.
So I had a bright idea and got a garden spade to stand the wheel on

Anyone else got a better way?
Gawd help us with a puncture in the rain

Lean the wheel against the hub..
Sit on the ground with your legs straddling the wheel and then use your thighs to lift and maneuver the wheel into place
Have your bolts or nuts to hand ?
And of course that's with the axle chocked as your legs are under the vehicle..

Another method is to lever the wheel on.
Van jacked up JUST enough to remove the wheel.
Place the wheel as near as possible then use a lever/longish screwdriver under the tyre and lift til it slides down the lever.... Repeat until you can push the top of the wheel inwards then put a stud/nut on.
Jack it up a bit and the bottom will swing in.
I had to use this method on my 19.5" RV wheels. At a guess each weighed 40kg plus and yours are like car tyres in comparison. .

Alternately, call your breakdown guys.
 
As I am getting older I find that lifting a wheel into place is more of a chore so - I either only jack the vehicle up enough to negate the need to lift the wheel or high enough to get my foot (industrial shoes are a benefit here) under the tyre. I must admit I rarely have to fit a wheel without the vehicle being on a trolley jack so height adjustment is easier, roadside wheel changes are more of a challenge!
It is in fact easier to fit the wheel to the hub than to replace it in the carrier of my T6 VW. That usually has to be done by sitting on the ground and pushing the wheel up the carrier bar with my feet trying to keep it balanced on the bar at the same time.

Thats what I did, the wheel was only just off the ground. But of course the rubber tyre wont slide!
Thanks Pappajohn, for screwdriver read Garden spade.
Might just find a suitable crowbar/ long screwdriver next time
Anyway, the object of the exercise was to check pad thickness and it was GOOD!

You could buy a door lifter.

It hinges and isn’t that big ?
 
Get a long bolt , the same size as the wheel bolt (if that type ) cut head off and screw into top hole by hand , roll wheel upto hub , tilt wheel to engage on bolt shaft . Raise vehicle slightly and push wheel to hub , align and fit second bolt , then next , then remove guide stud and complete fitment .
If fitting wheel retained by nuts , roll wheel into position near hub , align holes roughly , get two tyre levers and put either side of base of tyre and lift to tilt wheel more towards hub , and by differential lift align onto studs . Fit nut :)

If you don’t jack it too high, you don’t have to lift it much.
 
Have 4 weetabix.....?
Or, like others have said,,, use your thighs or a lever to get it on the pins.

Have a look at one of these on EBay
I carry two for Mercedes sprinter ( one would work) have used them twice when cleaning Alloys and the work great.

Sorry I should have said you just slide the wheel on to the alignment tool and you can align the wheel studs up
easily.??

So it looks to me like a piece of m14 studding might help a heck of a lot, I do only have the wheel about half an inch off the ground but thanks to everyone for the range of suggestion

Yes some threaded rod does the same. Having said that I like buying the correct wee bits n pieces aswell.

Bit of an expensive option but with our E&P levelling system, you adjust the height of the van until tyre is just touching the ground and just tip the the wheel and tyre off, and back on the same way, no lifting just aligning the holes to the locating pins.

As you can see by the add on EBay these are a smooth rust proofed bar with threaded end and a machined end for grip and a slot in the End to tighten if need be. And for the price £6.49 imo cheap for what they do.

Yes you are right DJT. I have stainless stell rod and dies in my garage. Could cut my own but bought a set. LOL

i use the breaker bar reversed to lift the wheel i find the trick is to line it up and push the bottom of the wheel in first
 
Just been looking it up and the thread size is apparently M14x1.5

Will go ahead and order them as I would like to change the wheels fron to rear to equalize wear

I just had that done last week and tracking done. Bare in mind if you have TPMS fitted as it can cause problems. If warning lights come on for TPMS it`s an MOT fail if applicable.
