I tried to use this for the first time yesterday.

We are at the C&MC near Carlisle and you are warned not to use the post code to get here.

So once here I used What3words to save our precise position to be able to get back easily after going to Carlisle and then to a pub for dinner.

Utter failure! The system could not get us back anywhere near the saved spot.

With the river close by Google maps says my saved spot is an 18 minute drive away on the wrong side of the river with a detour via a bridge to get there.

What3words divides the country up into 3 metre squares so what have I done wrong or is it not all its cracked up to be?

Something wrong I would suggest.

If happy to put the 2 W3W on here and it can be checked to see what (if anything) went wrong

I suppose you might have been given the walking time rather than the driving time

Is that a W3W or Google Maps road navigation issue? Presumably, the W3W labels are converted to coordinates for the mapping software to then navigate to? If you are on an Apple device, what happens if you test the same route with the latest Apple Maps version?

Don't follow this, if you found your way there in the first place, why couldn't you do it again?

Loudly.Kindest.Freshest was my saved location.

Here is the What3words saved location

Here is the Google map from my saved position sat in my van on site from where I saved the What3words location!

The pub was not on the way back from Carlisle so we were not travelling the same road again.

Lots of very small lanes, no landmarks and got too reliant on the technology!

Are you at Englethwaite Hall CAMC site? This is an example W3W address from using the postal address of the site -

///dialect.streaking.qualified

How does that look to you?

That is within 1 minute / 121 feet so on the site but a different pitch which is perfectly understandable.

That's the main problem with W3W. If you know the coordinates of a spot close by, then the coordinates of your spot will be very similar. If you make a mistake in W3W, the other spot might be anywhere, like in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

I use it and so far without fail, brilliant app👍

I’ve used it today to enter my details on the Evri (old Hermes) app and for the first time ever my parcel has arrived without a phonecall from the driver who is lost in the old peoples’ bungalows which are called Half Acres wanting to know what number I am whereas my house is called Half Acres and I’m in a different part of Sherborne. They don’t use Post Codes whereas all the other drivers use Post codes and have no problem. Maybe it was a coincidence but we’ve lived here 26 years and Hermes always make our hearts sink!

My apple phone gives
///loudly.kindest.freshest
as being in the middle of a field not a caravan site. I think you may have tapped on the screen when trying to save, the app then gives that location as tapping the screen moves the pointer. You have to wait for GPS to settle on phone then just tap SAVE being careful not to tap anywhere else

You are both quite right as we found out trying to get back to my saved spot. I can assure you that I saved it when sat in the van on the site on our pitch but it’s an oddity. I’ll try again another time!
