Welder refuses work unless I strip out Duetto.

Prepare the rusted metal, prepare the new metal........ Then stick it on with Sikaflex and a thick coat of bitumin underseal.
Job done, no fire risk.

That is not a structural repair and in the event of a fatal accident in which that repair was a factor it might end up in a prison sentence. I would strongly urge the OP not to consider this suggestion. If PPJ was joking adding a smiley might make that clearer.

I should say i was a Welder for many years, mostly in the Petro/Chem sector but i have welded several cars over the years, i always had a lad inside the vehicle with a bucket of water and wet rags and always stripped out as much combustible material as possible.

Your memory is failing you :p It was a lot more than 2 times. Those two times we weren't sure what was burning was probably a little concerning though :D

First I'd get a second opinion as to whether the welding will be long term, not just enough to get it through one MOT

Then I'd have to decide if the van is worth saving.

If it is I'd strip it out, update anything that needed it and end up (hopefully) with a van that will be not only better to use but re-saleable

Good Luck

OP says Duetto so hold prices well ... anything from 5 to 14k so may well be worth doing

WE seam welded mine. When I was applying sealant to it I was a little concerned at first about it appearing like I was trying to cover stuff up. However when I looked around at all the weld spatter and burn marks I relaxed :giggler:

Back in the 70's a pal had a Triumph Herald, the outriggers which were known to rust badly. It was hit quite gently from behind at traffic lights and a foot of thickly undersealed outrigger cased in chicken wire and concrete fell down into the road.

Hi everyone, a crisis here. I have a Duetto that needs extensive chassis welding and the welder refuses to start welding unless I strip out the inside of the van, including everything over the wheel arches and the shower and the toilet, coz it's a "fire hazard". Am I faced with righting off the Duetto, coz I am sure the Insurance 'Advance' won't help.
Is this welder being reasonable or just BM. I live in south Wales near Cardiff.
Sums photos of the work would help
The arias needing welded
