Has anyone on here uprated their MH weight themselves and not through an agency. If you have was it an easy process or should I leave it to the agency

I did my Hymer by going direct to Hymer, payed less than SVtec.

We've just done ours - paperwork is currently at DVLA to be updated. We used JR Consultancy over SVTech, partly because of the cost but also because both were very poor at replying to emails and JR were marginally quicker. The process was reasonably quick although there was still a failure to reply to emails.

One laughable point about DVLA though - they asked for a copy of the MOT certificate to be sent and I couldn't find it. I went online to find out how to get a replacement and discovered that I could download it from the DVLA website, print it off and send it to them!

J R Consultancy was £130 cheaper than SVtech. I will be posting copies of documents tomorrow but I have heard the DVLA are notorious at losing paperwork and it takes on average 3-4 months for them to complete

As per the link in post #3 above to my uprating thread, after a lot of research etc I found that you cannot do it yourself as an engineer has to give their opinion on it, hence my discovering JRC who is a lot cheaper than SVTech.

Does anyone have a website or email address for JRC? We want to uprate our van and saving £130 on SVtech fees sounds very attractive.

Are you sure the email address is truckcon Mel last time I spoke with John he said it was truckton.
Having said that I never did get a reply to any of the emails I sent him but apparently that's normal
Anyway thanks again for recommending JR Consultancy (John Ruffels) as I said it saved me £130
A big THANK YOU from me.

Update
I contacted JRC earlier in the week and they are dealing with it. Thanks to everyone who answered me.

We went with John Ruffles and the service was great and at a huge saving when compared to SVTech.

John sent the correct paperwork but then the DVLA made a mess of things and sent back a V5 with the incorrect details. It took the DVLA 44-days to send back the first V5 and then a further 12-days to dispatch the corrected version so good luck with the DVLA.

Am I right in saying most vehicles including MHs have an embossed aluminium plate riveted somewhere in the engine bay giving the relevant weights etc.
What I received from JR Consultancy was a self adhesive metallic type card which would be suitable for sticking over the paper plate inside the Hab door but I don't think it would last long under the bonnet.
Once the DVLA returns my V5 hopefully with the correct uprated weights then would it be okay to make and fit my own uprated metal plate ?

My Hymer has a stick on one to the left of the hab door, you can buy them on ebay

You can laminate it and stick it on of just buy one off Ebay, or make your own, so long as the info on it is in the standard format and matches what is on your V5C is will be fine.

I know this is a new old thread, but I thought I’d resurrect it.

I’ve been in contact with John Ruffles. I just wanted to go from 3300kgs up to 3500kgs, but he informed me that I could go up to 3850kgs without any modifications should I want to.

Having the extra 200kgs would be fine for us, but is there any advantages (other than the extra payload) in going up to 3850kgs?

Mine and my wife’s licences cover us to drive the higher weight limit, so there’s no issues there.

Will going to 3850kgs mean we have to adhere to lower speed? Vehicle tax costs?

Trying to weigh (:giggle:) up the advantages / disadvantages. Cost to have it done is the same.

As well as more payload, you get £100 off the tax.

It doesn't affect MOT. It only affects speed limits if your unladen weight is over 3050kg. As your MAM is currently 3300kg, this seems very unlikely. However, it may affect speed limits in other European countries.

It may (technically) affect tolls/ferries etc, but as they don't have weighbridges, you normally get away with that one. Your insurance company will need to know. Your recovery company may have a 3500kg limit. Only a few will tow > 3500kg (they'll go by the label, not the actual weight).

If you use it for non-personal purposes (i.e. carrying work equipment or supplies), you get into a whole world of operator licencing, tachographs and driver CPC. You do not want to go there. Either keep under 3500kg or use a different vehicle.

Same tyres?

Yes, it appears so.

The information required is:-

1. My name and address.
2. Vehicle Registration.
3. ALL data on vehicle VIN plate.
4. Preferred weight.
5. Fee (£180)

On the plate the figures are 3300kg
5800kg
1-1750kg
2-1900kg

From the V5......Mass in Service 2700kg. Max permissible Mass 5800

Tyres....Continental Vancocamper 215/70 R15 CP 109R. (y)

I understand the technical issues surrounding this subject, just wanted to know any advantages/ disadvantages.........I think the 3500kg just gives me that bit of extra payload, 3850kg would probably be overkill for us.(y)

I think you need to double check with John once you give him your details as your max is 3650kg, not 3850kg which is what he may be thinking of.

109's are load rated to 1030Kg, so 2000Kg on the rear axle.
Hence my question above, to get to 3850kg the rear axle would need to be uprated by 200kg to 2100kg which the existing tyres won't support, if however you were going to up the front axle from 1750kg to 1850kg and the rear axle from 1900kg to 2000kg that would give you 3850kg.

I'd suggest you go to a weighbridge first, loaded with water, diesel, bedding, etc. Your "book" MIRO is usually a barefaced lie. You might be glad of a few extra 100's of kg payload.

On the other hand, you might find you've got so much payload that 3500kg covers all you could ever think of. Until it is weighed, you have no idea.
