We've spent a night and a day in our new van, a 2008 Bessacarr e769.
The control panel told us the waste tank was full so we emtied it. When empty, it was showing as half full.
Is there a way to calibrate the sensor so that it shows us a more realistic level?

If it is the type with 4 stainless steel probes in the water you need to clean the probes. They collect fat and muck. There should be an inspection hatch you can access them via.

On our Bessie the access hatch for the waste water tank was under the van

Whatever you do the gauge won't be completely accurate.

Use it as a rough guide, not gospel. (y)

You'll probably find the fresh water gauge will be just as inaccurate. As Nick says, use it as a rough guide, you'll soon get to know when you need to empty/refill.

As a guide we've learned that a 100 litre water tank lasts about the same as a 80 litre waste tank.

I gussed that things might not be that easy. Our old van has a small knob to adjust the calibration of the fresh tank, though that is not that accurate. The waste tank has an LED to warn of being full. It also had an overflow so we could tell when it was really full.... I'm hoping that the waste tank on the new van also has an overflow :) We don't have an access panel for the waste tank. Only one for the fresh.

If you have a fresh water tank that holds say 100lts and that reads say 50% full then your waste tank will be around 50% full.
Would it not be easier doing it that way? :D

Just ignore it. If you crawl under the van you'll probably find a few small holes in the tank just below the top, when the water comes out of these, the tank is full.
