I know its not everyone's idea of travel, but have seen a few trundling around Europe over the years. If I still had the old Field Marshal I would definitely consider this restored circus living van. The ultimate touring outfit as long as you are not in a hurry.

Hi Al, The first tractor and living van I saw was in the centre of Carcassonne about 18 years ago. It was on Swiss plates and I have no idea where he was heading. Since then have seen many on my travels but most seem to be in Germany and almost all are on German plates regardless of where I have seen them. I suppose its the next best thing to a horse drawn Vardo.

i first saw romero before i got my trailer. he was making wooden toys and selling them on the road. used to see him almost every year, you possibly have seen him he might have been at pego de alta when you have been there .
but yes i have seen some others on the road.
ideal really get into shows at weekends for nought and meet loads of folk.
we have stopped on fairground camps etc mind mine and purple bobs truck fit in nicely . have seen some of the fairground a few times always make us welcome . but with a tractor and living van could be real good fun.
my dad always said he wanted a pony drawn living van. he never got one but sometimes i think am i turning into my dad ?
i know where he was coming or going as i get older.
as a child he lived on edwinstow estate my grandad was gardener there and used to employ traveling gypsies as and when . my dad knew loads families . some from cornwall used to work on edwinstow years ago. when we moved down here it was amazing where we used to get meeting his old friends . i know lots but dad seemed to know all of them .
by the way is that your younger brother by that tractor ? hee hee

You are making the same mistake I used to make Al. We forget that we have been trundling around Europe so long that most of the old school travellers we know are either too old to travel or are now pushing up daises. I often wonder just what happened to this very youthful traveller .

I signwrite heavy haulage outfits for a customer and he has about 8 of these in his collection.

We stopped at camp wolfengutt in Zell am see, in September this year. By luck there was a Tractor fest on, and as I did my apprenticeship at International Harvester in Doncaster, I loved it.

Just a question if I may join in, having a load of tractors available , taxed and insured, how would you go on on the tunnel towing a living van , is there anything to stop you travelling in Europe , don't suppose you could use Aires but in the old days living vans just parked anywhere anyway. Interesting though.(y):)

Serious Question!

If you had a Bowtop van towed by a Tractor, would you be allowed on the M/Way ?

Wow that brings back memories, carrying a bag of 12 bore cartridge to start it, not with the shot in though. Dragged a threshing box and baler all around Lancashire with one of them

My grandfather ran threshing box gangs around Cheshire for most of his life. First with steam then with Field Marshals. His steam engines also did ploughing and dredging work out of season. Last dredging work he did under steam was the moat at old Morton Hall just outside Congleton where he was the last of the Dale family to tenant farm there in several hundred years.

Am not sure about the tunnel, but after the sale at Blandford there was always a convoy of French on channel ferries with stuff they had bought in the auction. As long as you keep off motorways I dont think you would have a problem anywhere in Europe. Without going into to much detail am sure you are OK parked just about anywhere overnight as long as you are not causing an obstruction. I certainly know of no farmer that would not open a gate for an antique outfit for an overnight halt.

He he. I remember big Sam Johnson saying cartridges were for female Marshal drivers. He used to start em by spinning the flywheel :D2.

i do go abroad towing a living van . my trailer is classed as one .
my truck is only used to pull a living van .
i never use aires well almost dont . hardly ever use campsites but can and have . i normally use the ferry to spain just for ease as i live near plymouth.
there isnt a problem . its the ones with chairs etc that are camping thats the problems .
and we hardly ever use m,ways or toll roads . visit the villages meet the locals .
i think i can say my truck and my mates purple prison cell truck are well known where ever we go.
