Is it really this simple to connect our new Votronic MPPT 350 to the Schaudt Elektroblock EBL29 using the lead pictured?
  • Also suitable for an operation with EBL (electroblock) or EVS. (Copied from the Votronic website)
Or, am I missing something vital?
Our current set up has the outputs from the PWM controller going to the rear ports on the EBL.

Yes and no, the no is because the lead you show does not have the wire for the starter battery.

Doese your EBL have a display for current ?
No
Yes and no, the no is because the lead you show does not have the wire for the starter battery.
I thought it did, the top and bottom wires being 1 Hab and 3 Starter, I thought it odd there was no centre wire, presumably the negative.

Yes you are missing something which @Lenny HB mentioned to me in a PM, the lead doesn't have the centre connector wired which you need in order for the cab battery to be charged too (1 amp) so you'll need to add that.

Looks to me that the missing centre wire is the negative.

Another point as you are fitting a 350 watt regulator how much solar power do you have?
If more than 200 watts you will need charge the 15 amp solar fuse on the EBL, I have 300 watts and I fitted a 25 amp fuse.
Only have 150 at the moment, bought a 350 as we may well add more.

I have done exactly that, Votronic 350 MPPT to EBL29 using the connector set shown. I did downsize the MPPT fuse to protect the EBL. I ran a separate wire from the MPPT to connect to the engine battery without going through the EBL, seemed easier than trying to connect to the third pin on the plug. I was also introducing a battery to battery charger so I picked up that circuit but if not I would have slipped the extra wire into the plastic sheath on the connector set and then run it to the back of the EBL to pick up the starter battery connection.

No need to mess with the EBL, plugs and sockets equal loss, go straight to the batteries. You only need to go through the EBL if it has current monitoring. There is no gain or advantage going through the EBL

Much easier to wire into the EBL far less hassle than running wires to the batteries why duplicate something thas already done for you, you can make your own lead for a couple of quid.

The Votronic units are dual output but the starter battery output is only 1 amp. I already had a CB2 relay fitted as my last regulator was only single output I decided to leave it in place. The advantage of the CB2 is it switches on to charge the starter battery when the leisure batterys are at 13.6v or over and swtiches off at 12.6v. When the batteries are fully charged it will keep charging the starter battery well into the evening so no chance of a flat starter battery.

This is my setup, the CB2 relay is the black box to the right of the EBL at the front, clear box behind has a terminal strip to take care of the connections to the CB2 and the solar connections are the cable to the top left of the EBL (mine is an EBL 30).

What you should do is increase the size of the fuse in the EBL to suit the size of your solar panels. You can't damage the EBL the connections are straight through to the batteries the EBL fuse is inline with the leisure batteries.

Yes this time it looks like you are right;) I wondered why Votronic didn't give you the wire with the harness if it could be used that way but looking at the circuit diagram not all EBL have that connection to the starter battery 99 for example does not.

Can you go straight to the batteries and then use the EBL signal wire to tell the Elektroblock what you are doing? It looks like that in their wiring instructions.

Martin

EDIT @Lenny HB you seem to have answered my question before I asked it, you are getting too good(y)

Not really, Just connect at the 3 terminals where the batteries go into the EBL
"20A going in through a small plug and socket is best avoided. We see plenty of the EBL plugs burned or charred on the forums.

No1 on circuit diagram appears to confirm your diagnosis, though No2 appears not to match up with rear outlet, unless the use of numbers 1 and 3 on the back are just for illustration purposes and have no relation to the 1 and 3 on the front, but got me confused.
Thanks

Not really, Just connect at the 3 terminals where the batteries go into the EBL
Not easy to access the back of the EBL on a lot of vans, I've always connect on the front on all my vans.

Several things don't look right on the schematic, for one the battery cut out relay is in series with the starter battery. It's just a schematic not a true circuit diagram, you have to read between the lines.:)

No1 on the diagram is block 6 isn’t it and the number 2 the rear outlet. Or have gone wrong somewhere.
Yes No1 is block 6 for solar connection, No is the main battery connection into the EBL I think and looking at the diagram the connection could not be made that way to the starter battery because of the D+ controlled battery isolator, but I believe the connection exist via the fridge supply but still looking at the diagram.

I’d posed this question to the above yesterday prior to asking on here, basically “how do I connect it to the EBL29”
They said they would email me with the answer as they were unable to give it when I rang, no email arrived so I rang just now. To cut a long story short, where I expressed disbelief and disappointment, they don’t know and advised me to contact Schaudt. “Some are compatible and some aren’t” “we don’t know” they said.

I tried asking them a question too about what cables I would need and got a similar unhelpful response.

If they sell it they really should know the answer. The Votronic mppt installation manual specifically mentions EBL connection.

Easiest is to wire direct to the leisure batteries with 4mm2 wire Thus letting the MPPT do its job as per the instructions

Then fit a Battery Master (Special Funsters price) http://shop.motorhomefun.co.uk/product/battery-master/

Plug that into the port if you want.

That way the engine battery will get support for its quiescent drain over Winter when there is no solar activity (February lol) or when the motorhome is in storage undercover

Win win!
