A potential buyer of our van is requesting we pay £39 to get a vehicle history report from this site.
What do you think?

What does it say that you can't get off government sites?

Does that site look on the level? It’s a weird phone answer system
Am I right in thinking they can find out the history by looking at the mot history?

I doubt they will be able to find out anything not already available elsewhere

You will have MOT history, service history.

I think there would be more to it than MOT history.
They may have some kind of access to the insurance database etc to check accident claims and the like.
I certainly wouldn't pay for an unknown service.

100% a scam. Do not pay the £39, you will never hear from the "buyer" again.

Tell them they can pay for it and when there are no issues they can come and buy it and you'll knock the £39 off the purchase price, no negotiations. You won't hear back.

Most are bots and not humans.

Edit: also mention HPI Check (this is all this report is claiming to be...) and they might rage at you a bit.

It's American :( tell them to get it themselves.

Whenever we have had a new car (Second hand) We always use Green Flag there you will get any HP outstanding, written off, any accidents it's been involved in, MOT and tax check, previous owners and service records. All this costs in £9.99.I would never buy anything without one and when we have sold before I get one done and give any potential buyer a copy. Gives them a nice sense of security also.

I believe so.
Sounds like a complete waste of money.
If they are keen, they will make every effort to get to see the van, talk to you about it and possibly discuss price.
Seems a strange place to start the interested process.
If you look at the actual site, it's not telling them anything about the vehicles conversion or weights etc , but just it's make, model and type.
You can get that from the MOT.
Waste of time IMO.
Steer clear. What's the rush?

Liked others have said - they would like a report? Then they should get one. Not you, especially if you have any documentation (bills etc) that you are happy for them to look at.

Sounds like a scam . If I was interested in buying any motor vehicle I would obtain and pay for any reports myself .

When selling a vehicle I always tell any potential buyer to do a check and if it comes back with anything I haven’t mentioned I’d pay, that way you’re not out of pocket unless there is something dodgy with the history which I’m sure there isn’t.

Is it the company themselves trying to boost sales??

I’m not overly cynical, but have heard of exactly this scam going round at the moment.

If you really believe they are genuine, spend a similar amount on an HPI/Experian check for them instead.

My approach would be - if I’m paying, I choose the provider. If they want a specific provider- they’re paying.

When I’m buying, I always do my own check, regardless how reputable the dealer is.
